Upon our arrival, it took a minute to get anyone's attention. When a staff member finally did come over, they greeted us rather apprehensively and asked us if we had a booking. As it was already near eight at night and there were about six other tables occupied with plenty of space, hardly a busy night at all, we didn't think a booking was essential. They took another scathing look at us, paused for a moment, and then finally went to check the booking list. It seemed they hoped in that moment of silence, we would change our mind. We should have. After they scrutinised the book for some time, they pointed to two tables in the middle of the restaurant and said those were available. They were less than desirable tables, again a veiled attempt to get us to change our mind. My wife and I checked out the menu and saw the prices no problem but prices of this kind usually are accompanied with refined service, professionalism, and excellent food. This however, was not the case in my opinion.

The staff were rude and unfriendly to us for the remainder of the evening. It felt as if we had interrupted their night by daring to eat at the restaurant. It wasn't just one stff member, it was most of them. They were short and non-welcoming when taking our order for drinks and food. When they weren't helping their guests, they congregated in a group and chatted, threw dirty rags over the bar because they were too lazy to walk behind it, picked their faces and touched their hair. When the food came out, they slammed the plates down on the table. This was followed by forced, insincere commentary and no eye-contact. When we thanked the staff member for the food, they promptly followed with an unprofessional no worries.

My wife and I have experienced bad service before and usually let it go when a delicious meal makes it to our table. I probably wouldn't be writing this scathing review if the food was anywhere near as good as the prices suggested to us. Our entree was a water-based soup with four small mushroom and duck wrapped parcels. This dish was nothing special and was only half as interesting as the menu made it out to be. The mains were just as uninspiring. My meal in particular was awful. I ordered a beef dish and was surprised to find that most of the beef was indeed fat. I only finished about half of the meal. My wife's meal was somewhat better but nothing fantastic. However, she only only finished half of her meal after a cockroach crawled across her lap. That was the last straw, and we promptly left. Might I add that in the half hour or so that we ate there, no one else came in to eat at the supposedly reserved tables.

One might ask why we never made a complaint while in the restaurant. Frankly, we were so stunned at our experience, we didn't know what to do. Also, it surely would have fallen on deaf ears.

After leaving the restaurant my wife and I were in a daze thank goodness Kiama's famous Ice Creamery was still open. We later discussed how we should have spent the money from dinner there instead.
