A Fish Called Coogee

Directions
A fish called Coogee is a seafood restaurant with a difference- fish is charged for by the kilo and you choose which type you would like from the range of fish on display. The chefs then prepare the meal before you, making you feel involved from the beginning to the end of your dining experience.
Bookings are not accepted but there's always the option for take-away if seating is limited.

I absolutely love this place. This is pretty much one-of-a-kind seafood restaurant where you can pick your own fish from the whole range of options (original or marinated) and get them cooked on the spot. The small premium is absolutely worth it since everything that I ordered never failed to amaze my tastebud. They also have greek salads and freshly cooked bok choy on the menu for when you are on low-carb diet and avoiding the fries. It gets up to 90% capacity at dinner times so I guess this speaks for itself.

As a couple of people below have mentioned, this place is a bit on the pricey side for what is essentially pretty basic fish and chips. That said, it is great to be able to choose from a decent variety of fresh fish at the counter, and I love how casual it is (most people have come straight off the beach in bare feet and wet togs), and that you can BYO booze and not pay anything for corkage. A great choice of healthier options instead of chips too rice, bok choy and vegetables are all a nice touch. But I think the main reason it's quite popular is that it's the only fish shop of its kind on Coogee Bay road (I think), and the only semi-nice place to sit in and eat some good old fashioned fish and chips, if you don't want to get take away from that place on the beach and sit on the grass or the sand. To be honest, I think this place could really benefit from some healthy competition, which might force them to be a little more careful with their pricing and service. But all in all, not a bad spot if it's a bit of a buzzy vibe you're after.

My favourite fish shop. It's more of a fish restaurant than a fish & chip shop as the prices a higher and you can choose your favourite fish marinated in a variety of different sauces. There are also a great variety of salads & rice if you wish to stay healthy and away from the chips.

A definite favourite. Fish is always fresh and cooked to perfection. The thick home style chips are excellent as is the stir fried bok choy.

BYO with outdoor seating and fast behind the counter service.

I've only eaten here once because everything is very expensive and I didn't really find the food lived up to the price. It does look nice inside but it wasn't for me.

this place is over rated. the food is a bit on the expensive side and it feels like your paying resturant prices to dine in takeaway conditions

Great selection of seafood with a whole range of flavours. A bit pricier than the average fish and chip shop but its worth it

Dont forget to tell everyone that you have to pay an even higher surcharge should you wish your fish cooked! Talk about 'cake-age!' this must be 'fish-age'

Outrageous! Why do we have to read the fine print even at restaurants now?

Eat in or takeaway and enjoy down by the beach, either way A Fish Called Coogee serves up excellent quality fish. It isn't cheap however the range of flavours of marinated fish on offer is fantastic and the usual suspects such as fish burger are done with high quality ingredients and more flair than most places. If you have a dinner party and arei n a hury some marinated fish from AFCC is a fool proof way to a superb meal.

Great take away fish place, fish is marinated in a variety of flavours from lemon to Thai herbs. Very nice change to the regular fish and chips take away stores.
