A Place To Eat At Apte

Directions
Apte cafe in Alphington serves well portioned, home style cafe fare in a bright and airy setting. The breakfast menu includes sweet temptations such as ricotta pancakes and banana bread with stewed rhubarb and honeyed labna. And for lunch there's salads, homemade soups and pides with a range of fillings.

This cafe is one of my favourites. The food, coffee and cakes are always good. It can be a bit of a wait, but the popularity is a good indicator of the quality. Staff generally good, although have come across some that are not child-friendly.

The 'Indie kids' would say, I heart Apte. The posh mothers would say, 'Apte is devine Dahling!' and the average local person, such as myself, would say after taking that first sip or bite, mmm thats why I love this place.
I live only a street up from Apte, and granted, there isnt much competition for my patronage, but a better local caf I couldnt hope for. The staff is delightful, I can rock up in my casual trackies yet still feel at ease amongst the indie kids and the posh mums, and I always enjoy the food and coffee.
The only drawback is that it so busy. But dont we want great work to be rewarded? I am happy that the owners are receiving the popularity and success they deserve. Plus, any caf and brunch connoisseur knows that all good things come to those who wait. They will be appreciating the staff not rushing them on as theyre enjoying their delightful meals.

Very busy, long wait for coffee but it's worth it!

The breakfast and lunch menus are not groundbreaking, but the execution is zinging.

Traffic is horrible when you're part of it. When you're not, though, the whoosh of tyres on bitumen can be soothing. I grew up within earshot of Punt Road and I remember thinking, this is my ocean, these are my waves, as I settled to sleep. Surely part of the trick of living in a city is finding calm pockets in the palaver. Apte, an oasis cafe on a busy road, is such a place, impervious to the petrol-powered rant and rattle only metres away. It's easy to miss as you're nudging 60 km/h. We did a couple of U-turns before we spotted the place, on the Yarraford Avenue corner, and drove around the back into the handy gravel car park. The cafe is bright, crisp and uncluttered, with every kind of seating option: stools at a bench, a communal table spread with reading matter, regulation tables and chairs, and a couple of retro swivel chairs near the window. Tables are well spaced: gossip with confidence. Outside, there's a courtyard with lovely cottage-garden beds and a sad lawn. Crates ...
