Since 1968, Abbey's is an Aladdin's cave for readers.
Abbey's Bookshop at 131 York Street has over 100,000 books for you to browse, touch, smell, and has long been Sydney's gem for book lovers.
Tucked behind the Queen Victoria Building, Abbey's has become an institution among readers and seekers of knowledge looking for those hard to find books. Our bookshop remains a favourite of many of Australia's academics and authors, politicians and lawmakers.
It's a 'must' if your interests are in history, science, crime fiction or literature. And more treasures lie upstairs - thousands of fantasy and science fiction books in our GALAXY Bookshop, plus an enormous range of fiction in other languages within our Language Book Centre.
Abbey's really is an Aladdin's cave for readers!

Amazing little gem in the hearth of Sydney.
You can find each and every book you're looking for at this bookshop. I was looking for a very rare and old cook book a few years ago and never managed to find it. Then one afternoon while searching for a good novel I stumbled upon that cook book and was delighted to see it was in perfect condition and seemed to be fairly priced. The lady was very helpful and friendly. She even offered to remove the book from the shelves until I had the money ready. Simply the best!
Really nice bookstore. Love coming and spending almost whole afternoon here. But whatever you came for, you'll find so much more interesting books to look at so if you aren't in a hurry I bet you'll spend at least an hour looking around.
Great Customer Service - Great Staff 5*****
I had been looking everywhere for a specific book. I got no help from the larger stores and had my order cancelled on-line - without notice.
So I looked up TrueLocal in a panic and called Abbeys & within 5minutes they had put the books on hold & all was good in the world again!
I consider Abbeys as one of the best technical book stores, it has loads of books which may not nessarily be there in e.g. Dymocks. Great staff, feels like they are all librarians, for me, I think their books are everywhere, doesn't seem to find the pattern to look for the ones I want, their staff has helped me to pick the ones in matter of a few seconds. My recommendation would be, if you find any book online but do not exist in Dymocks across the station, come to Abbeys, 90% change you will find them here. Cost wise, it's the same as Dymocks, so I would enjoy it rather than waiting for the stocks to arrive in days. Highly recommended.
This is the specialist bookstore in Sydney for foreign-language books, whether you're learning a language or looking for a translation of a well-known book - or the original. They also stock a huge range of children's foreign-language books. That's upstairs. Downstairs they have latest releases, classics and an enviable non-fiction section which seems to cover most topics. You can just tell these people love books.
I am learning Spanish and needed some grammatical help. This book shop has the best selection of language books I have ever seen. It can be a bit overwhelming but the staff are really helpful and take the time to help you. Gracias!
