I own an AU falcon 5L V8. I took it to these guys after the transmission had begun slipping when cold in the morning, got worse and started happening all the time, after supposedly being serviced a few months earlier by another mechanic. Turns out it was 2L short on fluid (read VERY bad). I also got a computer readout done, which showed a number of error codes that I fixed as a result of having that information. All up was charged around $30 for transmission top up which I thought was very reasonable given my car had to sit on a hoist for 4 hours (AU's need to be dead cold to check transmission fluid properly, many mechanics don't know this) taking up room in the shop, and another $50ish for the computer readout. I thought it was pretty reasonable. I also went to another local transmission shop, didn't even bother to have a look, just said I need a new transmission, after I told him my car had 470,000km. A mechanic that assumes is not a mechanic you want to take your car to. I now have a much happier car, and saved around $2000.
I was stoked with the service I got with these guys. I know a bit about cars, so I don't like it when you ask your mechanic to do one thing and he does everything but, doesn't call you and charges a fortune. These guys did exactly what I asked, no deviation, no BS, and they called to ask if they should do a little extra to make a big difference. Good, honest, shop, a very rare thing. Knew what they were talking about, did a good job, and charged a fair rate. Stoked. Its a shame they only do transmissions and not full mechanics, I would get everything done here if I could.
I own my own Automotive mechanical repair business in Moorabbin (Auto Academy) and have been dealing with Brett at Absolute for a number of years. I have always found Brett to be helpful and courteous on every occasion, even to the point of passing on helpful information toward resolving a transmission fault that is not going to making him one single cent. This was how I first came to deal with Brett and is why I have had cars repaired by him on our behalf and why I have referred countless customers to him. Not once have I been advised of any negative issues in dealing with him.
This comment is not me trying to "look after a buddy in the trade" but is simply a recount of my own positive experience.
I'll TRY to keep this short. I own a 1989 toyota soarer aerocabin, 7MGTE with an a340e auto, 1/500 made It has had fair bit of work done I had previously blown 1 auto, which cost me 500+ to have swapped (labor only) It only took another 1000kms and the replacement broke too I purchased a heavy duty transmission, and a friend recomended absolute automatics for the install Brett quoted me 300 for the swap, but made it quite clear that I may be up for more if he had any issues I told him I also wanted the seals changed and my transmission oil cooler hooked up I KNOW that he replaced my seals, as they were leaking before The new trans also had a faulty speed sensor, which they replaced From memory, I was charged 380, including seals and the sensor He decided NOT to hook up my trans-cooler, because I hadnt secured it properly and he did not want risk having it connected...
Now being the car it is, and the work done to the transmission, Brett wanted 2 days to do the job to the best of his abilities and make sure he was 100% happy with it before returning it to me
CONS: They missed the small dent in my tailshaft dust cover, which was making a noise - easy fix in my driveway
Didnt hook up my trans cooler , which was good judgement by them - again done myself and its not like I got charged for it
PROS: Very knowledgeble- I had numerous telephone conversations with Brett, both leading up to the install and in the days after I had got the car back
10/10 service- As above- he knew exactly what I wanted and what I was talking about
Very well priced- Below other quotes + I wouldve also saved $40 and got a larger transmission cooler if I had purchased one from Brett, but had already bought one elsewhere
Now this was 7 months ago, Ive done maybe 2000kms and not an issue... No leaks, no noises, no slipping... I am VERY careful with who I choose to work on this car, and this is 1 of only 3 places I will go to
In response to Mr eddenall's comments, we have been in business in Mordialloc for a period of 18 years and have "NO" Unhappy customers amongst the hundreds of local businesses we deal with and thousands of retail customers we have. Mr Edde's vehicle came in on a tow truck undrivable and the perception Mr Edde gave me is that he did not want to spend much money on the car. He kept saying try to keep the cost down, however he was warned that these Mercedes Transmissions could cost around 4000-5000 dollars to fix. He did not want to hear that claiming that he could get his transmission reconditioned for 2000 dollars at a dealership. Before even starting the job, I knew what sort of character Mr Edde was going to be like. So we called it as we saw it and tried to do the right thing and keep the cost down for Mr Edde. The vehicle had a speed sensor fault code, which is common on these cars as they break a circuit board internally. We replaced the damaged component and associated components(which Mr Edde claims were not replaced), put the car back together as a repair and drove it thoroughly to make sure it was fixed. We did approximately 30KMS in the car, so I know it was right. Mr Edde paid 750 dollars and took the car away. 2 weeks later, Mr edde came in to say he was happy with the way that the car was going. Then another 3-4 weeks passed and Mr Edde came in claiming that the transmission was slipping. We took the car for a drive, with Mr Edde in the car and could not fault the vehicle. I said to Mr Edde do you want me to have a quick look at it for you at "No Cost". He replied, No I'm going to take it to Mercedes and get their opinion. Of course, a dealership would say that the transmission is stuffed because they dont repair transmissions, they only replace them.
The bottom line is this, Mr Edde initially had a speed sensor fault which stopped the car from driving. We were paid to fix that fault and get the car driving again at a cheap price. We successfully did that. If we did not do our job right, the vehicle would not have left the workshop, let alone driven for over a month. How that car got driven once it left my workshop, for this particular occasion, is entirely on the onus of Mr Edde Nio. I also suggest that the problem that Mr Nio had after the repair could have been fixed for less than a third of what he paid elsewhere. Don't forget Edde, you are the only disgruntled customer we have had in 18 years and that is the truth.
P.S stop making up names and stories now because you are going to end up in court if it keeps going. Yours Sincerely Brett from Absolute Automatics.
Do not try to juggle your way out of your dishonesty and lack of knowledge in Mercedes Benz repairs. Too bad that I could not respond to every statements you made as there is a limit of 1000 characters allowed in this comment box. You are making up stories as you go along. I have all the old parts from the transmission as evidence which you claimed have changed and charged me for. Common sense prevails, "I was most happy to pay about $5000 to get my transmission done the right way in the end by a Mercedes Specialist". I am just not happy that you did not repair the transmission right in the first place as you do know very well that changing the Electrical Kit will just temporary allow the car to be driven for a short time. You just out for a quick buck at my expense and claim on my mechanical insurance warranty. You can be sure that it will not just end here. My best regards to anyone who is thinking of taking their car to you for repairs.
Took my car there with transmission problem. A few weeks later, same problem... took it back but was asked for more money for repair. I argued that it is the same problem and already paid $2k for the first repair. They said the transmission consists of 2000 parts, anything can go wrong. Nothing to do with the first repair. Feeling uneasy with this comment, I took the car to another workshop... unbelievable.... I was told the first service was not done correctly, worse of all, I had been charged for so many parts not changed at all.
