I have this schizophrenic relationship with Middle Eastern food.

I love the exotic trappings – the sense of history and connection to the spice route – but I’m still awaiting the meal of epiphany, the dish that transforms my opinions and gives me that euphoric sense of discovery. I am certain that it exists, I just reckon it might be a rarity in Australia. A trek to Ahmet’s came with a double-edged sword of a sense of improbability and a glimmer of hope. For a taste of the Middle East, step inside this colourful eatery with its many dining spaces, including tables on Grey Street to watch the passing parade. Authentic artefacts line the walls, and there’s belly dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. The menu is extensive and dishes are meant to be shared, so pass around the mixed izgara (char-grill) with lamb, chicken, beef, and quail, and add a serve of tasty pide, a clay-pot casserole, moussaka. Mains average: $23.
