    Like a big Italian dinner party, Arriva has a relaxed air with indoor and outdoor seating. Sicilian Mark Paterno worked in Italy for four years and is passionate about his thin-based pizzas – the margherita and calabrese are favourites. Gnocchi is home cooked and that famous Italian dessert tiramisu hits the mark. There’s plenty of Italian wine on offer.

    IF Barry Manilow's songs were to be depicted as food, his greatest hits might be on the menu in an Italian restaurant.

    Not a new and funky place, but the old sort, serving the classics: Mandy a rich, cheesy lasagne; I Write the Songs  cannelloni; and Copacabana could only be a pepperoni pizza: all of them timeless relics of the ’70s and still, somehow, universally popular.

    Well, in downtown New Farm lurks a restaurant that is a collector’s edition: vinyl with barely a scratch.

    It was Mark Paterno and Brooke Edwards who turned New Farm’s Arriva into one of the most popular pizza and pasta joints in town. They moved on a few months ago, but it seems the crowds remained, as did the quality fare.

    Arriva has won the Queensland heat of the 2009 Best of the Best Pizza Challenge for Best Traditional Pizza. This September, it will fight it out at the national awards.

    You can um and ah all day about the merits of different toppings; the amount of cheese; and the sparse versus opulent motif. But good pizza is bound by the quality ...
