Asakusa is a Chinese-inspired Japanese restaurant, ideal for a cheap Asian meal but not if you are after authentic Japanese cuisine. It is popular with the locals especially students after a decent feed and is guaranteed to be busy at lunch and dinner time.

Had a late lunch here on the weekend with a friend, the food is good. They were playing Beyonce which my friend commented on as not being very inspired choice. So it's pretty relaxed and if you want a casual dinner then it is ok. If you want to have a special night with a date there are restaurants with nicer decor and atmosphere that are similarly priced in Chinatown.
  • I've tried the dumplings(Gyoza) and even not Japanese style fried dumplings. The sushi roll(Maki) is sooo rough. You can go other places for a better quality Bento box but seriously not this one. This restaurant is for people who have no idea what is true Japanese food !
  • Delicious food, service can be hit and miss when you dine in however. Home delivery is always on time (if not early) and always still hot when we get it. The chicken yaki udon is yummy.
  • Very impressive selection of sushi and the food was very nice as well. I knew the owner before the current one and he used to make a really nice fried udon but now the service has gone downhill. I really wish they could bring back the fried udon!
  • Love sushi! One of not so many Japanese restaurants that delivers food. If I could I would order everyday. Last time we ordered food everything was fantastic ...just delivery time was bit longer that expected. Highly recommended!
  • I have tried the chicken teriyaki with rice there and it tasted good, however the place was packed and I had to wait to have a table.
  • Nothing but good from me, ordered there 6 times and each time it has been excellent. Delivery time was quick and food was good. Favourite dish for me is Prawn Tempura, Definitely one to try if you are around Newtown area.

If this is one of the previous reviewers favourite places, they need to get out more seriously. As Japaneese goes, its as bad a whaling... full of fat desroys the environment and just a dogs breakfast!

Try walking down the road to the Sushi Train in Newtown and you will taste better Japaneese at a better price. Asakusa is a blight on Newtown and should be made illegal like whaling. Over priced driead up samon, Oily fried dishes and slow service to boot.

If my date took me here, I would dumb them on the basis of their poor selection.
  • This is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants, and each time we visit Asakusa we find the food to be extremely fresh and satisfying. It's always packed on the weekends especially with group bookings, and therefore is a very noisy, crowded restaurant. This results in slow service, and trying to waive down a waiter is difficult. The best thing going for it is the decent food for such great value. Try the agedashi tofu!

Quick and easy Japanese. That's about it really, try the sashimi beef, probably the best thing on the menu. Unfortunately the quality has deteriorated over the years, or my tastes have changed. Either way it's worth it for a weeknight bight or dinner with a big group.
