Trivia nights have become a hit with pubs trying to attract patrons on usually quieter nights. And Aspley Hotel, in Brisbane's north, is doing a tremendous job at just that.
We arrived shortly after 7pm on a Wednesday to find the restaurant of the renovated pub packed.
Not a table was spare in the traditionally decorated space with timber tables and chairs against cream walls with the kitchen and bar occupying one wall.
Luckily, there were a few spaces left in the stainless steel and red modern sports bar in the centre of the building, and in a cute, covered courtyard off the restaurant.
We grabbed two menus off the bar and weaved our way through the deep-in-thought trivia crowd to the courtyard.
The menu at Aspley Hotel is modern and inviting.
There are the compulsory steaks, some light entrees, plus a variety of appetising mains like our mimosa prawn risotto and parmesan-crusted lamb cutlets.
We started, though, with a contemporary pub favourite – the salt and pepper calamari.
