Coffee heaven in the old WB Ellis auction rooms

Auction Rooms is an outlet for Dench Bakers bread, a cafe and coffee roastery. This trendy cafe has an industrial interior with ceilings that go forever, exposed beams and black-coated wood. They are serious about their coffee, and there is just a small menu of light snacks to accompany the star attraction.

Look, it's a bit pretentious. The coffee is decent and the food looks very suave so if you are looking for that kind of thing it's a goer.

Finding a place open for a public holiday breakfast is challenging at the best of times, but glad we made the trip to the Auction Rooms. A 20's something waiter provided us with an indepth journey on the flavor coffee takes as it cools. Not to mention the brewing process. Honestly, I really wanted a coffee, but was truly intrigued with the brewing techniques and the knowledge of this young-in.

As for my brekky, my poached eggs were beyond perfect with ample servings of smoked bacon and veggie baked beans. A great breakfast. Clearly a popular place as was exceptionally busy. We had to eat breakfast at the coffee bar.

I have rambled on sufficiently and not even mentioned the decor. For that all I can suggest is that you go check this place out. Well worth the visit.

    I'll be back!

This place came highly recommended and I wasn't disappointed! The interior is very funky and it was very light and bright on a sunny Melbourne morning. I had the ricotta hot cakes and while they were yummy, they didn't top Bill Granger's hot ricotta cakes which I had at Bill's cafe in Sydney! The coffee was a bit too milky for my liking but I would go again. I really liked the concept of auction rooms and there was a definite buzz around the place!

Excellent place to go for a coffee on weekend, or even a beer once the weather warms up - they have a great selection of both.

With an ambience and interior as sharp as this, one expects food that's extraordinary.

We are in a very rich vein of cafe openings. Brother Baba Budan (which is the marvellous grungy coffee palace spin off from Mark Dundon's St Ali) is pulling one of the best espressos in town. Pearl's Geoff Lindsay has brought his vibrant Asian food into the cafe arena for the first time. This week, add another high achiever to this list of new arrivals - Auction Rooms in Northern Melbourne. This huge, sprawling space still has a to do list that includes acquiring a liquor licence and getting their monumental red Bolognese coffee roaster working - but it is getting a lot right. There's a flurry of people working on the floor and behind the counter at busy times, pretty posies of native flora on the tables and a variety of places to sit: from high stools at window benches to little tables for two in a sort of conversation pit by the front door. Like Brother Baba, Auction Rooms' interior is the perfect antidote to the multimillion-dollar excesses of the casino's gastro-temples. R...
