IT'S kisses all round at Paddington's Baci, thanks to its active efforts to attract book lovers to partake of its mix of art, coffee and literature.
You can find the philosophy behind this New Zealand enterprise on the website but suffice it to say here that it's a welcoming combination, with semi-circular high-backed padded booths as well as conventional tables and chairs on the covered street-side terrace, and a warm welcome whether you're eating, drinking or just browsing.
There's no kitchen, but the wraps, pies and cakes come from creditable places like Spoon's wholesale section, and my lamb and rosemary pie, topped with piped blobs of sweet potato ($6.90), tasted as delicious as it looked, although there was the perennial problem of pastry heated in a microwave, which goes either soggy or leathery, in this case the former. But at least it was edible, and the filling was extremely good, and with a small serve of fresh green leaves and a Greek salad ($4.50) to share, I was happy.
So was my friend, whose Thai fish cake (singular, and $7.50) fared better in the microwave. A...
