The Italian heart of Leichhardt

Located at the start of Norton Street's line of restaurants and cafes, Bar Italia is a popular place for reasonable pastas, serious coffee and a variety of gelato. The restaurant specialises in pasta but also offers foccacias for lunch and mains such as chicken schnitzel and salads. Bar Italia is open everyday for lunch and dinner and accepts BYO. Takeaway is available.

    Me, my friends, and my family always go to Bar Italia when we need a quick fix for pasta and gelato. Their food is delicious, affordable, and the full-range gelato is awesome too! Of course you won't be getting any fine-dining services in this area but if you want to have uninterrupted chats over your meal whilst enjoying your meal at the outdoor backyard, then this is the place to go.

    Have been here on number of times. The food has always beem great. Serive is good. The gelato is good. Wonderful place to hang with friends. The coffee is good and stong, just the way i like it. Very busy eatery - good sign. Happy eating!

    The only place I go to when I'm in Leichhardt! Coffee is great, and every time I can't pass up on their cannoli and panini! They are consistent, cheap and have a wonderful vibe!

    When I first started going here about six years ago, the coffee was incredible. The standard of the coffee has undoubtedly dropped over the years.
    Apart from that, I still think their food is fantastic and the gelato is always superb.

    If you like your coffee bitter, your milk burnt - then you'll be knocked over by Bar Italia. There seems to be dozens of staff fluttering through the cafe. Perhaps the time would be better spent, however, in the kitchen? Trying to improve what, I have to say, is dull, average food.

    I must say, the gelato here is some of the best I've ever had. Everytime I come here I must have the tiramasu and pistachio, although recently I have the almond and that is also fantastic. I would come here alone for the gelato.

    They also have pastas and other food on the menu, which is okay if you are looking for decently priced food.

    The decor isn't really that great, and you don't go here for the service.

    Have I mentioned how good the gelato is? You MUST go here to try it.

    Mixed feelings. You don't come to Bar Italia for anything other than desert, you just don't! They have been up and running for this long because their gelato is the best in Leichardt, and it's really great. But the food and atmosphere is just crappy and it doesn't compare to the rest of Norton St. I know it makes it seem 'authentic-like' but it's somewhat out of place and also the food you get in Italy is far better than what you get here. Go for the gelato and then eat it whilst walking around.

    Have been going here for over a decade. The food is absolutely delicious, I always have the pasta dishes and garlic bread. Gelato tops it off if I can fit it in. When you go in just find yourself a seat, don't expect to be seated by the staff!! A family favourite and highly recommended.

    While the food here is quite ordinary, it is good value for money. I love to come here for gelato and coffee, however, as those are two things I will not be disappointed with. The staff can appear to be quite rude, however that is because this is a busy cafe and they are often rushed.

    Truly awful food although the tacky tables and historic flavour of the place - it's been there forever - earn it an extra star for staying power. Look, if you don't know any better, and have never been to Italy, you might even imagine this is authentic, home-cooked Italian Thankfully it isn't.
