Bar Nancy is a quaint yet chic and atmospheric bar located in the outer suburb of Northcote. The ambience is warm and cosy, but with the subtle ruby red lighting, you could be forgiven for thinking you are visiting a Berlin-style club from yesteryear. The main bar at the front is a great place to order a drink from the extensive cocktail list whilst you listen to the DJ mixing their beats. Meanwhile, if you want something quieter, wander to the back of the bar, with its open fireplaces roaring during winter and vintage wallpaper, this will soon become a home away from home.

If wines are your thing, this will please, kitted out as it is with masses of bottles lining the walls in a display to make any vinophile lose their head.
The definition of "off the beaten track", when it comes to a night on the tiles, depends upon your usual centre of partying gravity. If you're strictly CBD-bound most nights, then a tram ride to the inner-outer suburbs is tantamount to interstate travel. But if you're on the outskirts of the city and the thought of another night brushing up against suits and Supre turns your stomach faster than a rancid pina colada, hanging out in the 'burbs where the streets are less densely populated with Maccas probably sounds like a dream come true. And, really, let's get this straight: Northcote is not the sticks. But for hordes of whining partygoers who'd rather commit hara-kiri than get on anything other than the City Circle tram, it may as well be. Let 'em stay in the inner grid, I say, as it means more room for everyone else at places such as High Street's delightful Bar Nancy. Located at the foot of "the hill", near the vintage wallpaper stores and esoteric fashion boutiques, you cou...

The sign out the front boasts about the best open fire in the northern suburbs and it's hard to disagree.
The intimate Nancy has the Rolls-Royce of open fires, quite capable of toasting 10 sets of toes. A doyenne of northside chic, this dimly lit and cosy spot has a reclaimed wooden bar, a small stage where DJs and live music acts do their thing on weekends, and decorations (curated shows) courtesy of local artists. There are 12 reds and 12 whites by the glass, a small menu of tapas-style bites but in this weather, it's hard to go past the bubbling Belgian chocolate fondue with macadamia nuts for dipping. There?s a nice beer garden out back, too, for those long-away summer days.
