Bay Of Bengal

Directions

The Taste of India... Spice, rice and very, very nice.

The Bay of Bengal was the concrete result of many dreams. Del Lacota, owner/manager, had for many years nursed a desire to have a restaurant where he could offer people an opportunity to enjoy delicious food in a pleasant atmosphere, assisted by knowledgeable and friendly staff, and at affordable prices.

When Del visited India in 1986 with his Calcutta born wife, he was charmed by both the people and the culinary specialities he enjoyed in each region he visited. On their return to Australia, Del set about learning what was needed to successfully cook Indian food.

When in 1990, a small restaurant site became available in picturesque Glenelg, Del saw this as a window of opportunity to combine his visions. And so was born the Bay of Bengal (Bay, from the geographical location, and Bengal, from his wife's birthplace).

From such an unassuming beginning, the Bay of Bengal has created a well deserved reputation for excellent Indian food in delightful surrounds. The reasonable costs and committed staff have resulted in a loyal following of patrons, both from within the local area, as well as further a field. Today, tourists enjoying Glenelg's historic attractions mingle with South Australians in the experience of the Bay of Bengal, one of the State's award winning restaurants.

Very disappointing...first meal out with husband minus kids in a long time- was sat down in an empty restaurant 2 feet away from the only other couple in there. Service was rushed. Pickle dish (tiny and overpriced) was snatched away before we'd done with it. Meals were barely warm. Requested 'medium' dish was mild and bland. Portions were overpriced and small. Within seconds of paying the bill, with drinks still remaining, we were asked to vacate our table as another couple were waiting!!!! Won't be back.

My partner and I loved the Rogan Josh and Lamb Saag which we shared. The staff were friendly and helpful when asked for some recommendations of wine to have with our meal. The atmosphere was nice without being over the top and we could hear each other even though it was quite busy and lots of people chatting. We'll be back.

Had the pleasure of taking some photos of the food and retaurant for Del and the crew at Bay of Bengal. I was then lucky enough to take home some of the food and wow, the Lamb Saag was awesome and the Butter Chicken was fantastic. Both were my favourites but all of the dishes were great. The Beef Vindaloo was too hot for me (I'm a wuss) but my brother-in-law loves a great hot curry and woofed it down.

Looking forward to enjoying the restaurant next time as well as the food.
