Had dinner the other night with my partner. Was very pleased with the level of service that was provided by a continuously smiling Italian waiter. Was very impressed at the range of cocktails that were on sale and the food was very good. came out on time and hot, very tasty

It's not Italy, but it might as well be, such is the quality of the food on offer at this hidden gem in Chermside.

If you’ve always thought the only reason to venture to the northside suburb of Chermside was to visit Westfield’s sprawling retail behemoth, think again. Tucked away in an adjacent street, where new apartment developments are nudging small, light industrial businesses out of the way, is an Italian eatery that’s punching well above its weight. Bella Cosi is an attractive little place with a smart red and grey fit-out and a pretty black and white backstreets-of-Rome mural at one end. I met a friend for lunch and only a couple of other tables were taken, but the word is Friday and Saturday nights are considerably busier. Being lunchtime, we didn’t want to overdo things, so shared a starter of oliva cestino ($12), which turned out to be one of those dishes that is so memorable it can single-handedly lure you back to a place.

Laminate tables and moulded plastic bistro chairs give a modern, pared back look but the menu is anything but.

Not long after we'd been seated two steaming bowls of minestrone arrived at the table next door. A slice of char-grilled sourdough poked out of the oversized bowl and the looks on our neighbours' faces confirmed that was to be my choice.

This is the Genovese version of minestrone and vegetarian in content, brimming with lentils, barley, vegetables and beans all simmering in a tomato-based broth. Drizzled with pesto I was surprised that parmesan was not offered and when I asked ...
