Casual all-day dining

This is where it all began, in 1992 - bills Darlinghurst with the miniscule kitchen and tiny dining room in an old backstreet pub building, serving just a blackboard-menu breakfast and lunch; setting the tone for what bills still does today. Local by-laws allowed only a few seats, hence the now much-copied communal table where everyone eats together, reading the newspaper or striking up a conversation with the person enjoying scrambled eggs next to them. Today, bills is still a simple Sydney corner cafe, serving a menu of bills classics

--TrueLocal description--
(the Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst one.) Brilliant brews, creamy scrambled eggs and maybe a ricotta cake or two.

Reviews of Bills

  • Went here on a weekend during lunch time, and I was very impressed with the menu and service. Food was more than adequate, very tasty with the coffee. Staff were friendly and helpful during the ordering process.

Bills Darlinghurst is located steps away from the crowd of Darlinghurst and into a residential area. The corner restaurant sports a middle-sized dining area with luscious plant dcor on the main communal table to match the modern wooden furniture all across the room.

Visiting them on a Sunday afternoon, we were served the brunch/lunch menu. We ordered the Fresh Aussie breakfast plate. The kale was very fresh and the dish was lightly seasoned. The eggs, however, were a little overdone.

We also tried their smoked trout with green noodle salad. This cold dish was also fresh, filled with strong elements, especially the sauce which is at the bottom of the dish. The smoked trout tasted excellent.

The serving sizes were quite reasonable and the food comes quite fast. The staffs are also prompt and quite friendly too.
  • Bought the cookbooks and tried to recreate the pancakes, the scrambled eggs, the corn fritters. I give up. Just go there and order some amazing food and keep your kitchen clean.

Had my first Bills experience a couple weeks ago on a Saturday morning and I'm hoping I'll have many more! The corn fritters are amazing - packed full of corn held delicately together with a light crispy batter. I agreed to the waitress' suggestion to get an avocado salsa on the side and was happy I did.. it was all so yummy! Coffee is lovely and the scrambled eggs have a divine texture.. so silky and smooth. My friend and I arrived at around 9am and I'm glad we got their early as within half an hour, there was a long line waiting for a seat. The decor is lovely, homely and fresh with a large communal table in the middle and a number of smaller tables scattered throughout. Service was helpful and friendly. As stated by others, it's a little on the pricey side, but it's worthwhile for a nice brunch with a special friend or two.

This is my favourite of the Bills cafes. Great food. They have added a lot more to the menu in the recent years. I tend to avoid on the weekends because unless you go very early in the morning, you'll be lining up around the corner.
  • The prices might make you cry into your eggs. but Bills is a reliable choice for a nice breakfast. The corn fritters are delightful, as is the service and ambiance.

I think this is the best of the three Bills restaurants around Sydney. Particularly in winter, it is probably my favourite spot for brekky. A Saturday morning rarely goes by where theres not a wait for a table. But even if youre standing outside in the cold, its worth it once you get in.

The place has a really warm and local feel about it. This restaurant is much smaller than Bills other restaurants. The focus when you walk in is on the large communal table sitting right in the middle of the room, which is covered in magazines and the weekends papers. I always order the bircher muesli because it is my all-time favourite, but most people tend to opt for the scrambled eggs, which Bills eateries are quite famous for. If you can fit it in, I also suggest getting one of the homemade muffins, which are often displayed on the counter. It can get exxy if youre not careful what you order, but its worth it this is always a great caf experience.
  • A Darlinghurst institution, breakfast ain't breakfast if it's not scrambled by Bill. With hotcakes to wet your whistle and a community at your table, Bill has got it served hot!
  • I love this restaurant, especially for Sunday morning breakfast. Be sure to make a booking though, tends to get very busy.
  • Don't be put off by the bad reviews! Bills is Sydney to a tee and well worth a visit. It is my all-time favourite breakfast destination. The eggs live up to the hype (and the staff are always more than happy to do a dairy-free version for me which is delicious too). The food is fresh, delicious and unpretentious. Try the ricotta hotcakes - they're to die for!
