Snacks and sweets glittering with silver leaf and lots of sugar.
Sydney's Little Indias are many and varied, from Liverpool's Fiji-influenced streets to the finer diners of the Hills district and the bargain eats of Harris Park. Dozing in the shadows of Parramatta's high-rises across the railway line, the weatherboard cottages of Wigram Street house a perfumed string of tidily stocked spice shops, spangly sari stores and casual eateries; at least six at last count. The theme is snacks and sweets, predominantly vegetarian, served in large dining rooms hidden behind cottage doorways. At one end of the strip, Billu's is typical, lined with a shiny all-singing-all-dancing sweet counter, glittering with silver leaf, fluoro colours and lots of sugar. Ease your way towards dessert with a thali platter (pictured, $12.90), either veg or "non-veg", laced with southern-style tamarind sourness or north Indian-Punjabi yoghurt creaminess.
