Birdie Num Nums in Carlton is the perfect place to go to enjoy a good cup of coffee and some tasty food, without having to stress about keeping the kids occupied. The cafe is well set up so that parents can relax as the little ones play in the sandpit, located in the middle of the outdoor courtyard. The food will certainly please, with a selection of value for money cuisine including French toast, Egyptian style eggs and traditional breakfast fare as well as gourmet meals, salads and pastries for lunch and dinner.

Walking into the courtyard of Birdie Num Num's I thought I had hit parental nirvana. A big sandpit, lots of kids running around, communal toys - my boy was loving it...and so was I. That is until we ordered breakfast. One of our group of 6 plus kids ordered 3 weak latte's & eventually settled for what she deemed mid strength. 3 of the 6 breakfasts came fairly promptly. 20 minutes later us remaining 3 breakfasters were told our meals had been given to another table. A disinterested apology was all we got. 15 minutes later 2 breakfasts arrived. My crispy bacon looked like ham. "I asked for crispy". 10 minutes later my breakfast arrived no different " that's as crispy as the cook will do" was the response. Still no 3rd meal. After getting a waitresses attention we queried & about 10 minutes later the final breakfast came, no apologies provided. Well, we were battered but not bruised, until we got the bill. My friend was charged for all 3 of her weak lattes even though 2 were sent back. A menu item we ordered but that was unavailable appeared on the bill...and yes, I must say that my $20 big breakfast was about the same size as my friends $10 bacon & eggs. Yep, birdie num nums is good if you want to get your kids out of your hair for a while, but it isn't good if you want food in your belly promptly or if you want good service & accurate billing. For me its a case of birdie num nums never again!

A breakfast spot where kids and adults leave feeling happy.

When I take the kids to a cafe for breakfast the soundtrack usually features "When Is It Coming?" and "That's Yucky" plus other well-known numbers from the preschoolers' greatest hits. Anyone listening to me (that doesn't include the children, obviously) will hear "Sit Still", "Don't Draw on My Leg" and, inevitably, the show-stopping "Quick! To the Toilet!" There's usually a crash and wail in there somewhere, sometimes mine, sometimes a small person's. If I'm with another grown-up, our conversation is a distracted stop-start affair. I often part from my friends feeling as if we haven't said a word to each other beyond placatory half-sentences when our children behave in particularly devilish fashion. Birdie Num Nums is blissfully different. There, while drinking my coffee unimpeded by other people's elbows or snot, I heard things such as "Let's swap spades" and "The giant's got the fire truck!" as the children played in the sandpit, got imaginative with a toy truck and generally ...

Beaut Greek treats and a place to take the toddlers.

ASK any household: if mum's happy, it's smooth sailing. She doesn't want much - just decent coffee, time to chat with the girls and some great food she didn't have to cook. For a mother with preschool children, that's a tough assignment. Places serving good food and coffee often don't encourage small noisemakers. (They're the ones with the tables bolted to the floor and barely a toddler's width between them - no room for prams that way). But a place with wholesome Greek food, a big, wide entrance, loads of character and a sandpit in an outdoor courtyard won't stay unnoticed by sharp-eyed mothers for long. Birdie Num Nums - yes it's named from the chaotic Peter Sellers movie, The Party - opened late last year. The fit-out is retro Australian: a quaint collection of antique scales and baking equipment hangs in one window and recycled honey-hued timber shelves display classic Sao tins, Schweppes and Pepsi crates and Cadbury drinking chocolate tins. It works well. Owner John...
