I HAVE been trying to get to Bishamon Japanese in Spring Hill for months. As it was recommended by several readers I was keen to try it, but life kept getting in the way.
Armed with a couple of teenagers we descended on a chilly Sunday night only to find the place in darkness. I had looked up the website where it clearly stated that it was open so we had to slope off disappointed, tucking our raw tuna cravings away in favour of a red hot curry.
A quick web check a few days later confirmed my mistake, not the venue's. I was reading about Bishamon in Covina, California. D'oh.
So back I went tail between legs on a following Monday night to find the place steadily filling with a half local, half Japanese-speaking audience that continued to turn over throughout the evening.
The old corner shop has a sandblasted brick wall inside which adds character and the wood and suede-upholstered chairs are more comfortable than you'd expect from an otherwise rudimentary fitout. A brick archway separates two rooms, one a waiting area for takeaways and for more casual dining, the other housing a tiny teppanyaki table which did not swing into action...
