Not much of a club rat, I am constantly on the prowl for Melbourne bars I can lose a lot of time in. Wander into Black Pearl on Fitzroys Brunswick Street and then let your eyes do the same, taking in the rainbow of spirits, liqueurs and little Tiki statues lining the shelves behind the bar.

Youll see, in their midst, three martini glass-shaped bar awards on the shelf, prized possessions of Black Pearls renowned mixologists. The range of signature cocktails are wholly invented and named by the small and dedicated bar staff. At the bar tonight are Evan, Chris and Angus three supremely talented drinks-men who know what I want before I do.

My eyes scan the list: its like Sophies Choice. The Blueberry Hills cocktail intrigues me: Havana Club Bianco rum, Limoncello, blueberry syrup, lime, balsamic. Drool. Or the Third Strike: Campari, Grand Marnier, lemon and orange juice, orange blossom. The food, too, impressed a great deal: cheap and diverse, including home-made secret recipe sausage roll....

I can't believe no one has reviewed the best cocktail bar in Melbourne yet. I've been going to Black Pearl for years and it's not just because I'm a lover of well made drinks, the best cocktails in Melbourne, great service and a comfy couch. But because Natasha, her family and the staff invite you in and make you apart of they're family. It's the kind of place you can go on your own, sit at the bar

Snuggled among Brunswick St’s many beery hangouts and scenester stomping grounds, this warm hideaway is a true gem. Unpretentious even though it has every right to be otherwise – it’s won numerous awards for its creative mixology – Black Pearl is home to a witty, expert staff and some of the squashiest couches you’ll ever have the pleasure of sinking into. The bar packs out on weekends, but is more chilled than a dry martini on school nights.

A visit to Black Pearl could start from pre-party drinks, carry through to all-night whisky tasting and onwards until you're asked to leave.

Many years before Jack Sparrow swung from the sails of his ships, Fitzroy's Black Pearl cracked open its first bottle of Tanqueray10. This warmly lit bar has a lot to boast about. Sometimes, when the bartender is imparting his knowledge on the la-di-da 4000-year-old whisky, you just want to slam your fist on the bar and spit, "Make my drink already, chump!" And when you've asked for a quick tipple but get a circus show of bottle-juggling wankery instead, you might feel the urge to catch a bottle mid-air and run off with it. But with a little patience your drink will be served in the sparkliest of crystal tumblers, accompanied by a pretty coaster and you'll be free to make yourself a nest of satin-covered cushions.
