About 30 minutes out of The Gap is Cafe Boombana, a gorgeous little mountain cafe. It is set just off the road on the Brisbane side of Mt Nebo village and has a lovely atmosphere and plenty of space. Dining is available inside and out, with a rear verandah overlooking the rainforest and a small dam at the bottom of the hill. New owners have just taken over the cafe (and it was good before) and the menu is as good, if not better, than previously. Almost everything is home cooked, and made from scratch upon ordering, but the wait is never very long. We ordered the beef nachos with guacamole and sour cream, and it was the best I have ever eaten. Instead of the beef and cheese being plonked on top of the corn chips, it was spread and layered throughout the whole dish and was divine. Definitely a plate to share as well, as I could never have eaten it all on my own. We also had iced chocolates and iced coffees, followed by cappuccino and English Breakfast tea, and all were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the kookaburras in the large gum tree just to the side of the venue (took quite a few photos) whilst we waited for our food, and then understood why they had screens down around the verandah as, once our food arrived, it seemed as if every native bird in the place decided we'd ordered for them.
Nearby there is the Boombana Rainforest circuit walk, and you can reach the cafe via this as well, which makes for a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon. Be warned, though, this cafe is extremely popular on the weekends which means you may have to wait a little longer than if you visit during the week.
Cafe Boombana is a hidden treasure in an even more exquisite setting. Nestled in the valleys of Mount Nebo and only a 45-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of the city you are met with inviting & friendly owners in a small, charming setting. I had the pleasure of visiting here on a Sunday morning and managed to secure a table with a beautiful view overlooking a small lake and forest tracks. Boombana seems to be an ideal stop for those enjoying a leisurely drive. I was amused after ordering to receive a stuffed toy (Eye-ore) on a pole instead of a number and was tempted to secure it as a keepsake. It took a while for me to decide what to order as the menu offered so many goodies (vegetarian incl) and went with a BLT with avo & cheese. I consider myself to be a connoisseur of the BLT and was very impressed, and I must admit this was the first one I had not been able to finish. Food service 5/5, Atmosphere 5/5, Quality & Freshness 5/5, Company 5/5, Value for Money 5/5 and I will definitely call in again if I'm ever in the area. I do hear the nachos calling my name. I have yet to find a cafe on the Gold Coast that comes up to par, so if anyone can recommend a location that they consider as good as Cafe Boombana, please feel free to share.
