  • To Bourke Street Bakery
Bourke Street Bakery is an extremely popular bakery and with good reason, the breads and selection of savoury and sweet treats are without exception delicious. Whilst the long queues are for their bread, there are many other goodies on offer. Grab a gourmet sausage roll with lamb, harissa and almond, or a ginger creme brulee with pistachio.

--TrueLocal description--
Sunday is the day people come to worship where the altar is an oven and the sausage rolls sacred objects. Join the line outside this artisan bakery where baked goods have been elevated to works of art. Sourdough is the specialty but we love the quiche Lorraine, sweet tarts and of course, the famous pork and fennel sausage rolls. Once you?ve made it in the door, grab a copy of their first cookbook and one of every pastry for good measure.

I had to see what all the fuss was with Bourke Street Bakery with a number of friends recommending both the Surry Hills and Neutral Bay stores. I am hooked. From the warm ambience of freshly baked bread to the sweetly aroma of gourmet cakes and tarts, trust me you won't leave without a purchase. Surry Hills is their flagship store but with stores at Potts Point, Alexandria, Marrickville and now North Sydney; it seems these renowned baker chefs are clearly on to something good.

You will be overwhelmed with choice from the wide selection of cakes, tarts, flavoursome sourdough breads and loaves, pastries and much, much more. Everything is cooked from scratch with fresh ingredients daily and well worth the extra $$. I had planned a quick dash to purchase a raspberry and pear butter cake (highly recommended by same friend) for a family event but instead ended up leaving with said raspberry and pear butter cake, a chocolate tart for myself (hehe) and a could not stop myself, I had to also have the Pancetta & Cream Cheese Sourdough Loaf - amazing!

The service is amazing and handles the crowds very well. Sorry, I think I forgot to mention before, this venue is popular and does get very busy on Saturdays so if you have the time and ability to go during the week then go then. The prices are a little towards the higher end of the scale for baked goods but honestly well worth the treat.

Everytime I come to this cute little corner bakery, I fall in love with it more and more. On a beautiful sunny day, you can see the local come to play, sitting on old milk crates, rusty metal stools, eating off old wooden tables, it's a pretty fun spot to people watch. Now, the food, it's pretty hard for me to order something other than the ginger brulee tart. If you ever get the chance, have it with a coffee, and like me, you'll find it difficult to ever order anything else. I had a bit of pie once, I quickly ate a bit when my husband went back in to get some bread for later, the pie was delicious too, and judging by my husband's reluctance to let me try some, I'm pretty sure he loved it too.

Still great after all these years. Love the tarts - all of them - but I could eat the ginger brulee tart everyday. The lines are long but don't be put off; it moves pretty quickly.

I don't love the sourdough (Iggy's all the way) but the croissants, especially the chocolate croissants, are pretty special.

An old favourite, and I suspect it will be for many years.

Don't let the line up out the door put you off - the selection is amazing - so much yummy bread. We split a sausage roll which was delicious and the sourdough that we ate later was great. Everything in the bakery looked great though.

A Sydney icon, this place is crowded all throughout the weekend but its worth the wait and the ordering process is pretty quick. Try the choc and raspberry muffin, the carrot cake and the pavola lemon tart - all are delish. The coffee is good too. Its a little chilly in winter sitting outside, so there's a park to take your goodies too across the rd. There's another bakery (same name) at Rosebery and Potts Point

Such a good little bakery. The muffins here are delicious and the fruit loaf is amazing. I rarely buy it though because once I almost ate half a loaf fresh in one day because it was sooo tasty I couldn't stop. Great coffee too. Only problem is that it is a tiny little store on the corner, usually with a line out the door. Worth the wait though. They have opened up a bigger one in Potts Point which I am yet to try but very excited about.

Ok so it's a little bit pricier than your average bakery selling soggy sausage rolls out of a pie-warmer, but the pies, tarts, pizzas, cakes and artisan breads at this place more than make up for it. The spicy lamb, almond and harissa sausage rolls are amazing, and so are the chocolate tarts and the strawberry and vanilla brulee tarts. Actually everything I've tried here is amazing. The line can get pretty long so I suggest avoiding it on a hangover when you're likely to be impatient and cranky, but otherwise it's not too bad it moves pretty fast and everyone in it is usually friendly and in high spirits. The staff, unfortunately, are not, and the attitude you could cop from any one of them on a busy day (which you can kind of understand but still) is pretty bad. Still worth it though it'd take a fair bit to get me and about a million others to stop coming here.

Bourke Street bakery is so famous that the crowd will be bigger than the shop. Dont let the long line deter you however, it moves very quickly and will have your hunger cravings satisfied before you can put sauce on your pie. A traditional French Boulangerie, they make all of their menu items by hand and with the best possible ingredients. A highlight of the bakery is the size of the menu, which will satisfy any taste bud or particular food craving. You can choose from the long line of pastries, such as a raspberry and Choc Mousse Tart, or a traditional ham and cheese croissant. If that is not to your liking you can also try the Beef Brisket, red Wine and Mushroom Pie or the lamb, almond and Harissa sausage roll. They also do sandwiches which include the Poached chicken which is amazing or the Pork Shoulder. Despite being small there are a couple of tables for two inside or you can take your meal with you to one of the nearby parks around picturesque Surry Hills. The choice is yours.

Unique bakery. Cheap considering the quality and originality of the food.
Really love the vegetarian option. great coffee..

Only negative is on one day I came, albeit late in the day and my vegetarian roll was soooo dry and unpleasant..
