News just in: thought De Lacy had closed for good? The hot little spot is open of a Friday night again. Bright Young Things, the chi chi event caterers, are on a quest to rediscover cocktail hour in true 1920s flapper style. Get down there at 5pm when the doors of the heritage-listed building are thrown open for mulled wine cocktails and warming mini dishes.

A classic Melbourne hidden gem has reopened its doors.
Like most in this game, I pray daily (and by candlelight) at the altar of the World Wide Web. From milking yaks to entrees at The Fat Duck (roast scallop, scallop tartare, caviar and white chocolate veloute, anyone?), it's all there. The trouble with online publishing is that there's a lot of stuff floating around that is no longer applicable. The publication date is all-important. Take De Lacy, for example. Hunt for mentions of the CBD restaurant and you'll find plenty, including a review from this very newspaper dated September 2006. It was spot-on, if I may say so immodestly. At the time. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since our last visit. Just little things, such as the restaurant closing last Christmas after 22 years. It didn't surprise all that much. The place was fairly daggy; the food didn't really cut it. But with a truly special location (Niagara Lane, between Lonsdale and Little Bourke streets) in an 1850s three-level former warehouse, De Lacy...
