Cosy up in this newbie. Catering mainly for a touristy crowd, Coogee is not known for fine dining but the Brook Street Kitchen is a neat idea and welcomed by locals. A posh dining space with huge candelabras reminiscent of Bondi Icebergs, sans view, is cleverly hidden instead at the back of the Rugby Club. The genius of this place is that rugby fans in sneakers feel comfortable in a slight state of dress-down, still impressing their dinner dates with salubrious surroundings (the girls get to dress-up on a Friday night). What’s cooking? A great combination of classy-looking plates like scallops with lime and chilli and confit of duck with orange. A welcome change. Add to that the down-to-earth dishes such as bacon, potato, onion and garlic pie and a really decent scotch fillet served with twice-cooked fat chips, horse radish and crispy melt-in-the-mouth onion rings. Tossed salad is so much more than ice berg lettuce! Large plates work for the rugby fans.
