Reviews of Cafe Fidama

I have been to this cafe/restaurant (it really is a restaurant rather than a cafe - this is certainly reflected in the price of meals - average $15 entree, $30 mains) before, and was pleased with the standard of the food. My most recent visit, however, was quite disappointing. We arrived at 7.30pm as a party of five, to be shown to a table that was wedged into a corner, with booth seating on the side and end of the table and the other seats tightly positioned immediately next to other diners' tables. Once we performed a game of human tetris to get into our assigned seats, we were then offered sparkling mineral water. My partner clearly asked for two bottles and we were then brought three opened bottles of mineral water. Figuring that we would certainly drink the water over the course of the evening, we all shrugged this off and didn't query the extra bottle of water. We then ordered our meals - all of us ordered only main meals, the choice of entrees not really being all that appealing, and most of us not being hugely hungry. This was fortunate, as once our order was taken and complimentary bread brought to the table (half a slice per person), we then endured an extremely long wait for our meals. During that time, we drank our water (as well as some alcoholic drinks) and asked for another bottle of sparkling mineral water. My partner very clearly said to the waiter that we only wanted one more bottle, as all of our glasses were still full. To our dismay, the waiter returned with three opened bottles of sparkling mineral water, and was then very insistent that we take all three bottles, as we had 'asked for more water', even though we had specifically asked for only one more bottle. We were firm, and he eventually gave up and gave us our one bottle, but did not look happy about the fact that we had not accepted his attempt to upsell. Our mains arrived at 9.00pm (after a wait that was well in excess of an hour). The food was generally good, with the most disappointing meal of the evening being the gnocchi with a butternut sauce, which was bland and a little over-cooked. At the conclusion of our meal, another waiter, who had previously been rather brusque when serving our table, came over to take our plates and addressed the child at the table (for whom there had been no childrens menu - she had to order a bowl of fries as her meal, as there was not really any child-friendly alternative on offer). He directly appealed to her to order a bowl of "delicious home-made ice-cream", even though we had all said that we didn't want to eat dessert. These attempts to unnecessarily inflate our bill by upselling bottles of mineral water at $5.50 a pop, and the direct appeal to the child at the table to incite a tantrum certainly were not appreciated by our party. We won't be returning.

Good food but with prices to match. More restaurant style food than your local cafe. Was not open for breakfast last time I looked.

The most wonderful food around. Excellent atmosphere and range - not your typical cafe food thankfully. Excellent breakfast.
