AN apron-clad Albasio La Pegna stands resolutely behind the till at his Claremont eatery, Caffe Rudy?s, shaking his head. We've finished our meal ? a hearty, casual midweek Italian spread of pasta, pizza and slow-braised rabbit, finishing with tiramisu.
But, no, he's not going to hand over the menu for me to refer back to. In fact, he's not that sure he wants his restaurant reviewed. He's still smarting from previous reviews of his fashionable restaurants that became a mecca for many of Perth's well-heeled. Albasio has the memory of an elephant ? especially when it comes to "elephants" in the room ? namely the $95 lobster at his plush riverside restaurant, Zafferano. "It was a live lobster," he says, defensively. "Anyway," he huffs, "I?m not sure that you?d get what we are about here." Oh, Albasio! Yes, I do get it. I also understand the irony of you buying back Bellissimo, the restaurant with which you launched your Perth career ? and then having to rename it Rudy?s because the name had been tainted by the ordinary food being served there after you sold it. Well, there?s a huge number of former Bellissimo fans who are delighted that Albasio?s back at his old stamping ground. They, too, get what he?s about ? a goo...
