If you eat in Chinatown, you have to get used to doing things the way the Asians do things. That's the fun of it.

I went here as part of a Truelocal event with a lot of other Truelocal stars and their friends. It's hard to see why this restaurant would need to invite Truelocal to do reviews. It was not only packed, there was a queue down the laneway. That shows they have to be doing something right.

They are doing something right! The food is plentiful and the dumplings were mostly very good. Adventuring into Chinese places - or for that matter an African place or a Vietnamese place - means that you try a lot of things, at least some of which you will never have tried before. Some of the things you try you'll end up thinking: 'Why on earth would anybody eat that?' (Not at Camy's - nothing was bad). But press on and you'll always find something that makes you ask yourself 'Where has this been all my life?'

The decor is nothing special. The music is the sort of music the Cantonese like, which means it is awful, but it's the kind of awful that is rather fun and anyway it's not so loud that it can't be ignored. You should all be laughing and talking too loud and excitedly to hear it anyway.

On this very busy night, the staff were rushed off their feet, so it meant that service was a little slow and a little brusque. It helps if you have some experience knowing how to help people who may not have great English understand what you want. If you want to be pampered in a place with snazzy decor, Camy's is not for you. If you want to adventure with friends, eat until you can't walk for practically nothing, talk furiously at the top of your voices and have a great time, Camy's is a good option. It's cheerful and it's fun. As part of a night out on the town, it's a really worthwhile place to take a group of friends.

What a crazy night! There is certainly a language barrier at Camy's which almost finished my night before it had started. We were there with a group and having never been to Camy's before I wasn't sure wear the party I was meeting would be seated.

The seating was a little awkward as once the wall side of our long table was seated we were pretty much stuck there until the end of the night unless everyone was to get up and let you out.

The food came out very fast and was plentiful. There were no plates for the first 10 or so minutes so I attempted to eat my first dumpling on a tissue. (I don't recommend doing this by the way as it stuck to my dumpling.)
There were various sauces on each table but no labelling and I gave my food a hefty drenching with vinegar instead of soy! So sniff before squirt!

The staff were not unfriendly, just indifferent and weren't helpful in identifying what each dish was, which is fine if you eat everything but being vegetarian I didn't want any pork dumplings thank you very much!

The food though was fine, I liked most things I tried but wouldn't rave about them. When you are paying $15 to stuff yourself silly, you can't complain too much.

A bottle of water and some cups would have been nice too, alas we did ask but I don't think the wait staff understood.

Despite the obstacles of the night we had a good experience at Camy's. If we are looking for a quick and cheap feed in the CBD again I'd pop back in.

If you're coming here you're not coming for the service, you're coming for the cheap, tasty & quick Chinese fare. That's what you get & if that was Camy's aim - they hit the mark. We took advantage of an all you can eat buffet type arrangement & the food came thick & fast. A good variety of steamed dumplings, mainly consisting of pork varieties & various vegetarian options were the mainstay of the night. These were interspersed with various treats including better than expected spring rolls, chinese broccoli & tasty yet oily noodles. If you don't go to Camy's expecting the world you'll probably get what you came for - a dumpling based version of fast food that doesn't break the bank!

Food comes out very fast, and the pricing is really good. If you're after a quick cheap meal, then this is the place. It's definitely quantity over quality here. The dumplings are not great at all, I've had much better at a similar price. They do take away which is good. The decor is poor, clearly they haven't spent anything on making the place look presentable.

Dining at Camy Shanghai Dumpling Restaurant was certainly a unique experience - where most restaurants have a tendency to overservice and overcharge, Camy is an excellent place to obtain a large amount of varied food for very reasonable prices. However, there are a number of drawbacks. Although most of the food was delicious, and I can particularly recommend the noodles and spring rolls, the dumpling pastry had a distinctive plastic taste to it. Instead of serviettes, there were boxes of tissues on each table. Instead of plates, again, there were boxes of tissues on each table. Although the food arrived promptly and there was plenty of it, the service was not great - no water was provided with meals, and the cultural diversity of the staff made communication quite difficult. Soy sauce, vinegar and chilli sauce were provided in unmarked containers, which was quite confusing - a problem cubed when coupled with the lack of water and language barrier with the staff. Still, the decor - although not elaborate or particularly charming - was adequate, the seats were comfortable and the music was not obtrusive, apart from the rousing rendition of Happy Birthday that floated over the speakers every so often. All in all, Camy is a dining establishment with niche appeal - cheap, yummy food in tolerable surroundings. However if you prefer things a bit more upmarket, it may be best to give Camy a miss. I probably will not return but was glad to have eaten here.

I got home and had to lie down from all the food we ate! Service is pretty crap (didn't bring us plates to eat while the foods was coming out to the tables). Food however was really good! I loved the fried pork dumplings and the mini spring rolls. Was hoping to fit in another pork bun but just could not manage it!

Went here last night with a group of about 23 of us and had a fantastic time!
The dumplings, alas were not the best I have ever had (I personally thought the fillings were abit overpowering) but when you are paying $15.00 for all you can eat, you really shouldn't complain!
The plates kept on coming to the point where we had to tell the waitress to hold off and give everyone a breather. No one left hungry, that was for sure!
The service was abit of a joke but we all saw the funny sides of it and didn't let it spoil the night. There is definately a slight language barrier with some of the staff and it seems unless you are paying your bill and freeing up a table, they really don't want to be bothered.

Agreed with Mizzer that the pre-recorded happy birthday tune which plays every hour offered much hilarity through the night .

I went here last night and I still feel full. Maybe think twice if you are a germ phobe as I dont believe they are particuliarly focused on presentation - but when they serve food like that I have no problem with marked walls etc. Service would not be a draw card either I think- but the food!!!! It kept coming and coming. Great value for money with the all you can eat buffet and I can not imagine anyone leaving this place still hungry. The food came out fresh, hot and full of flavour and yes yummo dumplings. I will definitly return. Thanks true local for this find - YUMMO!!!!!

OMG... I am SO FULL! Apparently this place is an institution and I can see why. Very BASIC decor and service. The food arrived long before the plates but was fresh, tasty , varied and is so cheap at $15 all you can eat buffet. 23 of us ate and ate and ate.. And I dont think we worked our way through the menu.
Try it , even just to experience the loud pre recorded happy birthday song that plays at regular intervals during the night.

I have been here so many times mainly because the dumplings are so cheap. They are not the most outstanding dumplings I have definitely had better, I don't think they are freshly made and I wonder if they are even made there.

I like this place for the atmosphere.

Almost a secret society for those who actually know where to find it. Service that borders on hostile, tacky décor, great dumplings and wonton soup and the cheapest prices in town.
