Seeking honest pub tucker with a twist? Take refuge in Newtown's back streets.
Don't worry about the score. I like Carlisle Castle Bistro because it's simple, affordable, does the basics well, then throws in something a bit different. Think pig's trotter fritters with horseradish aioli ($13.50). The waitress jokingly offered us extra plates on the condition we washed them up afterwards. And that's when they have a waitress. It's that kind of place. I've been eating lots of pub food lately so, yes, my life is all beer and skittles. I wish. For the most part, it's pub grub in the pejorative sense, making a kebab from a caravan seem gourmet. The British fad for gastro pubs has yet to take hold here. Sure, there are plenty of great hotel restaurants, from Bistro Moncur to the Four in Hand, but I'm seeking a good time with a few mates that won't cost as much as your broker's margin call.
