Styled like a 1920s Speakeasy, Caz Reitop's Dirty Secrets is located pleasantly close to public transport on Smith Street Collingwood. The decor is great without being too frighteningly theme-y, and there is even a bluestone basement room below for functions. Unfortunately this room is very small and poorly lit, and thus entirely inappropriate for poetry readings. Speaking of poorly lit, the drinks are nice but not exactly cheap - although they have $9 cocktails from 5 til 7pm, Wednesday to Friday. I would return, but not for a while. I recommend CRDS to anyone seeking an interesting bar experience, but not as a venue for events which require light or space.

IN THE world of bar design, set yourself a mood or vibe and you can find yourself teetering perilously close to the world of theme drinking. Too much bamboo and flame-lighting and you're stuck in a tiki twilight zone; too many mirrors and flocked wallpaper prints and you may as well have a nightcap at Franco Cozzo's. So when you read that Caz Reitop's Dirty Secrets is decked out in "1920s speakeasy style" it's inevitable that you will feel a little twinge of apprehension. However, there are no Bugsy Malone rejects with a Tommy gun and a cigarette holder greeting customers at this Collingwood delight. Housed at the vegan/handbag/art gallery end of Smith Street (oh, hang on, that's both ends - right, the city end, then), Caz Reitop's modest street frontage is accoutred with midget tables, chairs and pot plants for those who like to take their spirits in the bracing night air of Melbourne's increasingly chilly evenings. Inside, however, is a far nicer (read: warmer) proposition. ...
