Despite having only been established in the mid noughties, the Chalk Hotel in Woolloongabba has developed itself a reputation as a modern drinking and dining establishment. There are two bars on site including the Stinks Wine Bar which serves a range of alcoholic beverages and the Juice Bar for those who want a simple, aromatic coffee or healthy juice. With the restaurant, the menu veers away from traditional pub fare and instead serves Modern Australian cuisine that is fresh, flavoursome and well-presented.

Sticks is the signature restaurant in this chic hotel. Expect a high standard of service, and be impressed by a range of fine tastes from the a la carte menu, which has many gluten-free options. Standout performers include the sand crab salad with avocado, fennel and celery in rosehip vinaigrette; steamed black mussels in white wine, tomato and creme fraiche; and dukkah-dusted Amelia Park lamb loin on eggplant flan with broad beans, snow pea tendrils and ratatouille jus. Wines are well chosen, with a good range by the glass. There’s a supervised area for children during breakfast. For something less formal, the Chalk Hotel’s other eatery, Stumps, has wood-fired pizzas and grills. Mains average: $27.
