Reviews of Chat Thai

This place was a hit before The Galeries food court renovations, and rightly so. Lines at lunchtime were always long and you would need to get there close to 12pm if you didn't want to queue up to order. Prices were cheap ($7 to $10 for a dish) and while chaotic, the service was relatively quick.

Fast forward to today, when The Galeries food court reopened to the public. Not only did I receive an email from Chat Thai last week, one of the waiters at Chat Thai Westfield also recognised my husband and told us about today's opening. I completely forget about it of course, but the husband (a longstanding Chat Thai fan) calls to remind me and arranges to meet me for lunch.

I arrive, and I'm quite impressed with what they've done. The once almost-dingy food court has been transformed to quite a modern and relaxed looking space with dark floors and ceilings, low-hanging lamps and a mix of seating arrangements.

I look around and Chat Thai is not where it used to be. Then I notice the crowd, topped with security guards for crowd control. Surprisingly, I manage to get a free table immediately, and it's only about 10 minutes later that our order is ready. The food is just as good, but prices have hiked. Today's reopening prices were $7 per dish, but from tomorrow, they go up to about $12 or $13 a dish.

I'm glad Chat Thai Galeries is back, but they are no longer the dirt cheap lunch option. Prices are still very reasonable, but it does close the gap a little between the takeaway option and the Chat Thai restaurants at Westfield Sydney or Thainatown nearby.
