A good-looking new glamourpuss with potential.
THERE are two different, yet each entirely valid, ways of looking at Canvas, a new restaurant on the Burwood Road Vatican belt near Hawthorn's main Catholic church, close to the Glenferrie Road shopping strip. One is that it is a welcome touch of contemporary restaurant sensibility in a suburb heavy with ethnic eating pleasures yet light-on for urban sophistication. A place where super-smart design, big-budget fitout and good taste have come together to create an interesting multi-use space, part lounge bar, part New Age pub balcony, part a la carte dining room. The other is that it is something of a wasted opportunity; a safe and commercially mid-order approach to food, wine and service that underestimates the interests of local foodies, yet may well prove to be spot-on in its reading of the market.
