Chiba Japanese Restaurant

Directions
Chiba Japanese Restaurant in Moonee Ponds has a reputation for being one of the finest Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. Excelling in all that they produce, Chiba focuses on creating only the finest traditional dishes at an inexpensive price. They utilise only the freshest produce for their creations and the atmosphere is a buzz with noise and movement. As it is quite small and quite popular reservations are a must, their meals can be ordered to take away also.

Went there a fortnight ago. "Cosy" little place, really a bit more squashy than cosy. Noisy and felt a bit rushed. But having said really enjoyed our meal. Bento box my son had was a bit bland. but hubby and I really enjoyed out meals. Not badly priced.
    Would seriously consider going back.

Best Japanese going around. And so cheap! As the other reviews say, you will need to make a booking because this place gets booked out!!

Went to Chiba last night for my anniversary after such great reveiws on here.
The restaurant is pretty small, so small in fact we drove past it twice but once in we were greeted straight away by a bunch of lovely, smiling Japanese girls.
We ordered drinks, were a tad disappointed that they only offered one choice of Sake but were pleasantly suprised when the waiter brought us each a complimentary dish of pickled bean sprouts to start off with.
Being first timers to a sit down Japanese Restaurant we decided to go with one of their banquets, to ensure we got a good taste of everything and it was a perfect choice.
We went with the Tokyo banquet which was $40 a head and included all the classics from miso soup, gyoza, sukiyaki, tempura and a great selection of fresh tuna and salmon sashimi and sushi.
My partner went crazy on the sashimi, says it was the best he ever had and gobbled up all the salmon portions. I personally enjoyed the crumbed, fried oysters with japanese BBQ sauce, so fresh and tasty yum!
The best bit though had to be desert, Green Tea ice-cream with Red Bean paste. Something I had never tried before but am now craving and wanting to have again!

All in all a top night out. Chiba has fantastically traditional and tasty japanese food and the service is impeccible. The girls were attentive, fast and above all smiling everytime they came to our table.

Would have been nice if the seating was traditional Japanese but that was not important.

The best Japanese in Melbourne. Everyone should give this place a go. Its always busy, so you need to book, even on a weekday. You won't regret it.

Nice clean restaurant with a good lunch or dinner service. I prefer something more formal in decor for dinner but the service...

If you want a restaurant that provides subtle and pleasant decor, friendly service and sashimi chefs that have their skills down to a fine art, head to Chiba in Moonee Ponds. Sashimi and sushi are beautifully fresh and the common favourites such as okonomiyaki and kaki fry are top notch.

I often go to other restaurants with friends but always come back to restore my faith in my favourite cuisine. For me there are few bad Japanese restaurants but not many exceptional ones. Chiba is spot on every time. This consistency is what counts, especially when you get a sashimi craving!!!

By far my favorite Japanese restaurant, everything on the menu is awesome, my favorite is the tataki beef & spicy tuna rolls. we get take away from Chiba at least once every two weeks. Super fast service A+++

The best Japanese over our side of the city by far. The food is fresh and of a really high standard. It's always busy, so you'll need to book in advance, however they do takeaway, which is also a great option. Lunch menu's are really well priced - around $15 for a HUGE bento, and $13ish for the moriawase (with miso and fruit).
