  • To Ching-A-Lings
Hidden up some nondescript stairs on busy Oxford Street, Ching-a-lings serves beer in bottles and long necks and mixed drinks and wine and has a great outdoor area located at the rear.

A breath of fresh air on the Oxford Street strip and definitely a lot more low-key. The outside area shuts before midnight where everyone moves inside and some start to boogie to the laid back, cool sounds.

It's fairly no frills and that's the way the crowd likes it.

I think they must have purposely chosen not to put a sign up for this bar. If you want to find it, it's about 4 doors further up the hill from the Columbian on Oxford Street, between the tobacco shop and a cake shop. The sign on the door says it's a solarium and the licensee information is written above the door in marker pen.

You head up the stairs in to a rather dark, narrow and long room. The longest wall has exposed brickwork, the floor is wooden and the seats are black. The bar is at the back of the room, with DJ decks on one side of the bar. There is also a cool outdoor deck area beyond the bar.

It's a bit grungy but unpretentiously cool. They have also just started selling pizza, with a special pizza + drink for $15 deal on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

A quick warning is that the toilets are a bit on the basic side, they are simply 4 or 5 stalls in a stairwell landing. Still in the grand scheme of things, I have been to far worse in the past.
