ONE of the pleasures of this job is exploring new cuisines.
But with unfamiliar territory comes the difficulty of knowing few, if any, benchmarks of style and quality and, in these situations, it can be great to get a little outside influence. Hence my happiness when I was hunted down by a reader after exasperated mutterings about the lacklustre offerings of Middle Eastern cuisine in Queensland. His sense of purpose was inspirational. So eventually I made my way to what he claimed was the best Middle Eastern restaurant in town - Chopan Charcoal. Its decor is basic, albeit strewn with rugs, cushions and pictures recalling its Afghan heritage. And, while it is worn and bare-bones in terms of the little luxuries, you can see it is scrupulously maintained and clean.
