Reviews of Church St Enoteca

How this place was awarded a chef's hat in the 2009 Age Good Food Guide is beyond me. This is Melbourne, we are spoilt for choice, particularly in this area.
The pasta was plain for $30, the room is too big and impersonal (great for functions), and the service was patchy at best. When I go to a 'chefs hat' restaurant I expect that no more than two staff members are involved with my table, not five throughout the dining experience; and if you are going to go to the trouble of having a sommelier, do it properly, not some kid that has no idea.
The positives gleaned from the evening were that the staff on the whole were friendly, the wine list is superb, and the bread was fantastic.
Did I mention that the food disagreed with our stomachs?
Enoteca is isolated and unnecessary - look elsewhere.

Fine dining of the traditional European type is the norm here.

Fine dining of the traditional European type is the norm here, but if you're a Richmond local starved of nice places to take your visiting friends or family, Church Street Enoteca could come in handy. There is a large dining room lined with peach leather, San Pellegrino-style prints and ample glassware if you wish to sample an expensive dessert (say cassata or quince and ginger pudding), or there is a small bar area for those wanting a less formal Church Street experience. Serviced by a staff that aims to please, this Yarra side diner is designed for long lunches, long dinners and long-sleeved shirts. Amid a battalion of interior design houses, Enoteca might easily be mistaken for its retailing brethren, so keep a careful eye out as you pass. An island of dessert wines and cheeses in a concrete jungle, Church Street Enoteca will please grandma and girlfriend alike.

The food is unpretentiously modern, mostly Italian, and generous.

Down on Church Street it's hectic when the sun's up, but by night, the strip's a whole lot quieter. Yes, Church Street, Richmond, has an icon restaurant, a few nice "pubs", bars and a couple of ethnic eateries, but there's none of that energy you get when they all sit cheek-by-jowl the way it happens along, say, Brunswick, Greville or Fitzroy streets. You can even get a park. And "quiet" might be a suitable adjective for a restaurant that has lasted longer than some might have expected, too: Church Street Enoteca. Not "quiet" as in not busy; "quiet" as in "achiever". With very little fanfare or self-promotion, this restaurant has plugged away in the past few years before its split with the Dutton organisation (remember it started as Dutton Enoteca when the car guys were still next door) to bring things up to a speed that, quite frankly, challenges my usual scepticism about restaurants operated by hands-off proprietors who leave things in the lap of hired personnel.
