    Good value and a great deck help this eastern suburbs lounge serve old-fashioned pub spirit.

    THE Tea Gardens Hotel is a bustling barn of a pub in the middle of Bondi Junction, surrounded on three sides by Westfield mall. Overdressed girls drinking through straws mingle with casually leering tradies in work gear. There's pounding music, plasma screens and a big, bleeping pokie room. It is not, in short, this writer's idea of a good time. The Circa Lounge upstairs is a slightly different story. It is still vast, with wooden tables and chairs stretching across the carpet from the curved bar. Thankfully, there is only one plasma screen. A laid-back, younger crowd is outside on the two generous decks - the front deck providing great views of shoppers and the buses churning up Bronte Road. At the back, there is a big, partly covered beergarden with lots of seating. A chalkboard at the end of the bar promises $8 cocktails on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8pm to 10pm. We're here at the right time, so we give it a try. The lone, rather well-thumbed, laminated drink...
