Despite the fact that my Labor Party membership has been soundly lapsed since 2010; and in the last election my vote took on a decidedly florid shade of Green, I was keen to visit the Canberra Labor Club whilst poetrying in the nation's capital this month. A large, bright establishment, the Labor Club seemed a promising place to procure the iced coffee that myself and my comrades had been hankering after. Unperturbed by having to present photo ID upon entering, we signed in, paid our $1 fee, and were pleasantly surprised to discover that iced coffees were a faction... sorry, FRACTION of the price of a normal iced coffee. And despite being delivered to our table sans serviettes, the aforementioned iced coffees were spectacularly delicious - truly enough to make our caucus raucous with delight! The Labor Club also boasts meals, drinks, snacks, a very interesting cocktail bar and poker machines. The clientele were an eclectic mix of folk from all backgrounds who seemed comfortable and relaxed, socialising among fellow true believers. During our short stay in Canberra we cheerfully returned to the Labor Club to partake in their transcendent iced coffee again; and should I ever find myself somehow stranded in Canberra for any length of time, I would certainly join the Labor Club (membership won't empty the coffers either - a mere $5.50 or so if I remember correctly) in order to return and explore their menu and cocktails. To any Canberra denizens or interstate visitors, I heartily recommend visiting this establishment to party with the Party. The Labor Club gets my vote!
The two Local Stars with me were desperate for an iced coffee and I had been so long away from Canberra that I had forgotten the obvious choice, Cafe Essen, in Gareema place. Then the girls spotted this: Cool, a club owned by the Labor Party! (dont blame them). Their intuition though that such a place must have iced coffee proved to be completely correct.
I used to attend meetings at the old previous Canberra Labor Club a few blocks away (dont blame me) back in the days when they actually listened to what people said instead of telling them what to think. You know, those days when they were better than the Liberal Party? Frankly it was a bit of a dive like a very run down and unwashed RSL. This place is New Labor - very different and really nice open plan, clean and bright, a VERY pleasant ambience, a second floor with actual cocktails, food as well I seem to remember, green Thai curries and things. Probably not a place to hang out in all evening though. The staff are so terrific and helpful that you almost feel like not saying anything bad about the government. And if you are working-class, well, there's still Belconnen Labor Club.
To get in you have to be a member or say youre from interstate and they will ask you to show I.D. and look at it in a friendly but quite careful way. I guess political stuff is being discussed there, theres a lot of suits and women in Canberra power dresses, people are pretty smart-looking. If youre not a member they will also charge you $1.00 to get in, which you will immediately save on drinks.
All we had was iced coffee from the coffee-and-cakes bar and the Local Stars with me ...well..Melbournites...Skinny milk and two shots of coffee with three packets of carcinogenic sweetener. Cream or ice-cream? Yes. Actually probably the most delicious iced coffee Ive ever had...maybe not the ultra best coffee by Melbourne standards but boy were the girls ever happy.
Very nice place to visit if you are in Canberra. Extra half star if you are a Liberal Party spy.
