Service and muffins make a surprising comeback at this loud inner-west pit stop.
The Caffeine Queen is nervous. Cordial was her stamping ground, a regular meeting place for her Friday morning kaffeeklatsch when the cafe opened four years ago. The CQ regally accepted Cordial's first change of ownership but the cafe's subsequent lack of cordiality got to her and she took her caffeine custom elsewhere. Attitude matters. Your neighbourhood cafe shouldn't have any or, if it does, it should be the welcoming kind. Food matters. Eggs should be fresh, if not organic - and perfectly poached. Breakfast-friendly bread is essential: there's nothing worse than shredding your soft palate on a toasted sourdough crust. Coffee matters. It should be full-bodied and robust not burnt, hot not scalded, in cups that aren't too thick in the lip and whose handles aren't so small you can't grip them.
