Our stay was in August 2009 for 3 nights.

We were greeted on arrival by the doorman who rushed straight to our taxi and checked in our bags. May I add that this same doorman had a friendly smile on his face every time we saw him throughout our stay, even at 11pm at night when it was pouring rain and with the wind chill factor = about -2 degrees C! A big button through coat, gloves and a scarf, he kindly opened the door for us as we ran inside chilled to the bone. His job- yes. But he did it so well. The other staff in the hotel were neither here nor there, and yes the check in queue was lengthy.

The rooms were spacious and modern, clean and well-serviced, just as you would expect from an at the time almost brand new 5 star hotel. Our room was on the 20- something floor, facing the Tram Car Restaurant station (That restaurant experience was wonderful too, by the way!), and certainly quiet. Great location if the Crown precinct and night atmosphere is what you're after, a little way out of the CBD though still just a short tram ride. The hotel's pool is BEAUTIFUL, didn't try the spa or gym facilities.

Gordon Ramsay's restaurant was AWFUL. (My review about it was conveniently removed from another review website). By far the WORST food I have ever eaten and really, for the price, location and his reputation- not that fancy either!

Overall a great stay- but make sure you eat at the Casino instead!

I stayed at the Crown Metropol Southbank for 2 nights as part of Touring Crew and artists for a music festival. On my arrival, I checked in and then caught a taxi to Brunswick to meet friends at The Retreat hotel (excellent) and enjoyed a great pub meal and headed back to the hotel at midnight. It was just before this, at around 11.30PM that someone ate a $238 meal at Gordon Ramsay`s Restaurant in the hotel, and charged it to my room. All you need to do this is to quote a room number. No proof of ID, no room key needed, no signature check. This occured 3 months ago, and not only have I not received a refund, or an apology, they have been rude and implied I was lying. Totally unsatisfactory. Pursuing it with Victorian Police.

Normally when I stay in Melbourne I have always stayed at the Promenade, but I thought this time I would try the new addition to the Crown empire. I really enjoyed my stay with the stylish interiors, large clean rooms and exceptional staff it really felt like a 5 star venue. The view from my room on level 24 was not outstanding as I was looking over the car park and highway with a slight glimpse of the river.
For an early dinner before I had to head out I ordered in a kids spaghetti from room service. It arrived within about 15 minutes and was delicious. I would really like to go back and try the Gordon Ramsay restaurant if the kids meals are anything to go by. The hotel is only a short walk across a bridge to the cinema side of Crown. Its now a toss up between Promenade and Metropol for where I will stay next visit.

There is a lot going for Crown Metropol and a few things that are letting them down. Its sleek interiors, large king rooms, stylish new fittings give the sense of a grand boutique hotel. But make no mistake - this is a very large hotel with over 600 rooms, so doesn't make it the most personal experience I've ever had and the front desk service provided the worst 'first impression' I've had for a while. Upon arrival I was disappointed to see a very large line for check in, but they have a lovely roped off section that reminds me of lining up at the bank and instantly makes me think 'this is going to be a loooong process'. It was super slow and by the time I was served I'd suggest Crown had about 10 pretty unhappy guests to contend with and it took over 15 mintues to progress up the long queue - the bank is quicker. Lots of apologies doesn't cut it when the people in the queue think they can probably do a better job checking themselves in than the peple behind the counter. Once I was served it didn't get any better with the guy explaining to me I was a day too early for my booking. 'I dont thiink so' was my reply, so whipped out my iPhone showing him the booking confirmation for the hotel on the right day and the booking number. 'Have you got the right spelling' i asked. 'Oh yes I have, you must have the wrong day' even though I showed him the booking. At this point I was about ready to walk down the road to another hotel. He called the booking office who quickly advised he had the wrong spelling, and again lots of apologies followed. Any apology doesn't cut it when you're incompetent at the most basic things.

My room was on level 17, in the centre of the hotel facing North. A pretty average view of freeways and a carpark next door but worse was the constant humming noise of the extraction fans on the building next door. You could hear it over the TV, so a quick call to the front desk 'groan' ensured. This time I encountered a polite woman who quickly dispatched someone to my room and moved me to the south side. This room was just as stylish as the first but without the noise. I'd booked a work mate into the same hotel who was on level 25 on the same side and didn't have this problem so if you have a north facing room insist on it being high up.

If you're after a large hotel for conference bookings or want to party and be close to the action of Crown Casino then this place is probably ideal. But if you hanker for old fashioned good hotel service which starts with check-in, a quiet room (there is still too much traffic noise on level 17 due to average glass insulation v's other Melbourne city hotels) then Melbourne does better.

Walk through the super stylish foyer of this luxurious new hotel, check in to your Luxe room, grab the complimentary robe, put on your bathing suit and head up to the infinity pool and sun deck on level 27 for some serious chill-out time. With sweeping views across Port Phillip Bay, chic rooms with plasma TVs, state-of-the-art facilities such as the indulgent Isika Day Spa, and an exclusive guest lounge, the sheer opulence of this beautiful hotel is hard to beat.
