CUTLER & CO

The epitome of casual fine dining

Cutler & Co would have to be the summit of fine casual dining. Understated yet sleek and stylish, this relatively new venue is the latest venture of Andrew McConnell and Pascale Gomes-McNabb. The limited but visionary menu includes superbly executed dishes such as anchovy pastries for appetiser and mains like suckling pig with caramelised sherry vinegar or wood grilled quail but the dish certain to impress is the delectable chocolate ice cream sandwich with caramel sauce - unbelievably decadent!

I had the degustation menu here. I waited just over a month for the booking. The food was good, but I wouldn't say great. I felt the service was a little rushed. We had to move seats 1/2 way through our degustation menu even though we had a booking.

We had dinner here on a Wednesday night and had a set menu as there was over eight of us, which was fine for me as it gave me less to choose from.
I had the seared scallops for entree and could not get enough of the sauce, although I was surprised that it was the whole scallop and they were really small, but delicious.
For main I had a beef dish which had beef cooked two ways, which also had some type of wasabi mayonnaise and maybe a horseradish cream.
The poached pear for desert was the perfect way to finish off the perfect meal.
Service was also great, I agree with Jacki M that the staff are very attentive without being overbearing!!

We were lucky enough to get a table on a Saturday night. We had the detestation menu with matching wines and I have to say it was perhaps the best meal I have ever eaten.

The food is classed as modern Australian and there were a number of courses with seafood. I felt though there was a nice balance between this and meat, as my dining partner is not a huge seafood lover.

It was hard to pick a highlight as every course that came out we'd declare "no THIS course is our favourite"...until the next course arrived. A stand-out was however the crispy pork - yummmm

The service was exceptional with all staff being attentive, without being overbearing while also being informal enough to make it an enjoyable environment to be in.

I'd certainly rate this experience as being on par - if not exceeding - that of Sydney's Tetsuya's, and with $100 more change back in your pocket at the end of the night. Awesome!!!

Make the call, mark it in your diary and count down the days until you can tuck into Andrew McConnell’s celebrated fodder. With a two-month wait for a booking on a Friday and Saturday night, it certainly tests the ‘good things come to those who wait’ theory. Set in a former industrial workshop, the walls have been stripped back, lighting has been installed that conjures a romantic atmosphere and the vibe is upbeat. If patience isn’t your virtue you can always try your luck on a week night or rock up to the bar for a drink anytime.

IT USED to be easy to dismiss all this fuss about chefs being the new rock stars as complete palaver, until recently I was privileged to witness the first recorded crossover between the food-nerd and ghetto-fabulous movements.

It happened at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, and at the centre of it all was the hero of this piece, Andrew McConnell, who found himself on the receiving end of a kind of Spinal Tap homage when a youngish fellow in a blue T-shirt and jeans walked up, tapped two fingers to his heart, gave a little salute and said "respect". To his credit, McConnell had the good sense to look surprised and bemused and rather mortified. Anyway, he's never been much of a rock star chef - his CV is blissfully free of TV appearances and book deals, bless 'im - but ironically enough, his latest venture is a venue fit for rock stars and terribly fashionable types and, naturally enough, food types.

Sitting near the summit of casual fine dining, Cutler & Co is understated chic, attracting air-kissing types from the glamour set along with some local Fitzroy characters to bring in just the right amount of designer grunge. Chef Andrew McConnell’s limited but visionary menu includes superbly executed dishes such as anchovy pastries for an interesting appetiser and indulgent mains like suckling pig with caramelised sherry vinegar. The best dish? The chocolate ice cream sandwich with caramel sauce. So decadent, dahling. Mwah!
