Feast on a Middle Eastern menu that won't burn a hole in your pocket.
Auburn at Sunday lunchtime is a buzzy place, full of families stocking up and strolling the promenade. And we're doing the family thing, too. My brother, a one-time denizen of the suburb, is a fan of Auburn's bargain foodie delights. "Where else can you find an entire shop dedicated to Turkish delight?" he asks. Auburn is a multicultural hub and, to prove it, there is a big sign on the local mosque inviting one and all to its next open day. We had originally aimed to go to a restaurant where, he swore, patrons can hire a water pipe and smoke apple-scented tobacco. But it is closed. Another member of our party phones her regular taxi driver, who happens to be Iranian. Where exactly is that authentic Persian restaurant he had recommended? Ah yes, he says, it's the Darband Persian Restaurant. He follows up with a text message: "Order the Darband special, a salad fasl and the ghormeh sabzi." A few minutes later we step into a plain room with wood-like vinyl flooring, pale brown...
