Reviews of De Clieu

Overrated to say the least. I met a friend for lunch last week only to be very disappointed about the menu. It was very small and not much choice. They may make nice coffee but I would not recommend eating here. Staff were rude and pretentious. Very disappointing.

The great thing about Melbourne (particularly Northcote, Fitzroy and Collingwood - perhaps even Thornbury) are the great little cafes that have popped up in recent years. De Clieu is a relatively new cafe in Gertrude St. Fitzroy. Some friends had been there recently so I thought I'd check it out. In short the place looks great. They serve Seven Seeds coffee which has a strong name in the marketplace however I always find it to be a little bitter and lacking a real rich flavour. The thing about cafes like this one is that it seems to fill up with pretentious hipsters/yuppies (the line seems to be getting more blurred lately) that can be a little annoying. I'm a little over the Mac book crowd. Having said that, as I mentioned before the place looks and feels good. Will pop in again soon, but I won't be hanging out on the window sill with the pretend artists/writers.

If you think you're cool, want to be seen as being cool, or you're just legitimately cool, you should check out De Clieu. I'm not very cool you see, but for the 45 minutes that I was there having breakfast with a friend, I felt as though I was pretty hip. Everything from the trendy staff, wooden furniture and internal layout (wide open windows where you can sit and read the paper) through to the intricate finishing touches such as tiny glass milk bottles that come served with your coffee, add to the magic of this stylish yet understated cafe.
However, I can't say the same about their food. I found their breakfast menu limiting, self-indulgent and confusing with the very few breakfast options mixed in with their lunch menu. I wasn't brave enough to try the coco pops with red cordial but instead opted for the ham, boiled eggs and cheese platter served with warm baguette slices. The presentation was impressive, however the meal itself was a little bland, which makes me wonder if I'd eat at De Clieu again. I think I would be willing to head back there in the future and soak up some coolness rays, however if the menu range hasn't improved, I think I'll be heading back down to Arcadia a few doors down which excels in uncomplicated yet delicious dishes.
Being cool is a prerequisite for Melbourne cafes, but sometimes the magic lies in offering simple things in a creative way.
