A Diabetic on Insulin from the age of 12, I have experience into life as the patient and how patients perceive illness and health. Born into a farming family led to my love of gardening. The surgery gardens have many fruit trees planted. The fruit is for patients to try, to encourage better diet. I do not believe health care is all about treating disease and illness when it occurs. We must switch focus to preventing illness, maintaining good health and quality of life. I look forward to having an involvement in the Australian Lifestyle Medicine Association. I believe all Australian governments have it terribly wrong if they only pay Drs. when patients get sick. We must reward Drs.to keep their patients healthy and well. Patients do get sick and often through no fault of their own. When they do it is important we ensure that their illness is as short as possible, with minimal long-term complications. I have been managing diabetes as a GP since1993. I believe the team approach is best management of diabetes and have thus set up the Acacia Ridge Diabetic and Family Medicine Clinic, a co-operative of GP and allied health professionals all situated very close to the Elizabeth St. Medical Centre. I believe that Type II Diabetes can be virtually cured in a lot of cases with appropriate management and lifestyle changes. It is my role to help facilitate management and changes in lifestyle that are necessary. Type II Diabetes can in some circumstances be a progressive disease that inevitably leads to the need of insulin injections but in my experience this has been a rare event rather than the norm. I welcome referrals from any health professional for second opinions on management or from patient self referring. Assessment will not only involve medications and pathology review but also lifestyle , diet, exercise, emotional status, work and family commitments and fundamentally how this all links in together to give the best outcome.
