It might be stay-at-home-Monday, but nobody?s told the Leedy punters as they converge on Oxford and Newcastle streets cruising for a bite.
We?re there to check out Jus Burgers, chef Justin Bell?s new Leederville venture, but the queue is long and my companions are getting testy. The ever popular Ria is also packed. ?Oh, dear,? I suggest forlornly to the husband. ?Looks like we?ll just have to go to Duende.? He can hardly wipe the smile from his face. And after downing a series of true-to-their-roots tapas with a glass of MO Monastrell Bodegas Castano Alicante 2006, I, too, am smiling from ear to ear. It?s been a while since I first slid into a red leather banquette and bathed in the glow of tealight candles at Perth?s first tapas restaurant. Nobody does this style of dining better than Duende. And, at $148 for four, including the Spanish wine, nobody is providing this quality any cheaper.
