Not the easiest place to find, hidden out the back of a hotel, you'll be taken away by the 1920's decor, and the cocktail list is magical. So much so that Eau De Vie is my choice for a cocktail lounge in Sydney. The service is spot on, with the waitress always knowing my choice of cocktail. definitely one to visit
"Fashion fades and only style remains"...the same can be said about a bar. To be a truly fabulous establishment there has to be more than just a concept (that in time will fade); it has to offer an amazing experience.
Eau-de-vie certainly has the incredible cocktails, original, well-mixed and stylishly presented but these were not what we remembered. Instead our night was coloured by the terrible service received. I can only describe the experience as similar to a break-up and who goes out on a Friday night to break-up with their staff?!!
When asked for a glass of wine, our staff refused to serve one - yes we get it is a cocktail bar but a simple "we are a cocktail bar and so don't have an extensive wine list but I can recommend x y z.." would surely have been more stylish than a flat out refusal...later on in the night the same staff brought two glasses of champagne to the table instead of the ordered cocktails. Having explained there had been a mix up our friend asked if they would be complementary but the staff rudely informed them there were no complementary drinks at the bar. I then asked if we would be charged extra for the champagne (as they were far more expensive than the ordered cocktails) only to see the staff pick up both drinks and pour them into the cute plastic popcorn container on the table as the staff proceeded to tell us off...staff then returned again with ordered drinks and demanded that we 'discuss' the issue. Trying to diffuse the situation I suggested that perhaps we forget about it and we just get on with the evening but to no avail. As we finished our drinks, paid the bill and sought out our jackets our staff was still hovering trying to 'discuss the issues'.....
It would be great to return to the bar and enjoy the amazing cocktails but I am not sure I can cope with another break-up...
My friend had stopped in here for a drink with her husband one evening and was determined to gather her girlfriends and head back at the earliest convenience. The reason for this being that she had tried to order a cosmopolitan but the staff very politely let her know that they would only serve cosmopolitans to groups of four ladies, a la Sex and the City. So thats exactly what we did. Four of us got dressed up and reserved a table at this cool bar at the back of the Kirketon hotel one Saturday night. The great thing about this place is that you wouldnt know it was there unless youd heard about it beforehand. It cant be seen from the street but rather is tucked away at the back of the hotel down a long dimly lit corridor. This adds to the prohibition-era feel of the place. The lighting is low and there is a feeling of people sitting in groups chatting in hushed tones. We were seated in a corner lounge area which was lovely and were waited on by the friendly staff. The cocktails are amazing. As intended we had the cosmopolitan which was created in a big shaker the shape of a ladys leg with a high heel (sounds odd? - yes it was but very cool) and served in vintage crystal glasses. A ginger beer based cocktail was served in a small copper mug and a tea based cocktail was served in a small china tea-cup on a long stem. The quirky cups also fit in with the prohibition-era feel as apparently they used to serve alcohol in normal cups to throw people off the scent (so to speak!). We also got some olives and a cheese platter which were lovely and not too pricey (which leaves more money for cocktails). Highly recommend this place for a slightly more sophisticated evening out and some of the best cocktails in Sydney.
I refuse to say anything else except that this place has the best cocktails in Sydney. Must add them on facebook for updates and for special events..the rest I will leave up to you to decide!
Nice little bar at the back of Art Lounge, I never would have known it was there untill I was told by staff of AL to walk through to the restrooms. I walked through and found a neat little bar tucked away. Penty of space and lots of areas to sit, staff were extremely friendly and their beverage menu and range of spirits was amazing. Had a few canapes there which were also really nice. Definately a place to check out.
A great place if you want to go for a catch up chat with friends. The bar is hidden WAAAAYYY at the back of the long dark corridor that is the lobby area of the Kirketon Hotel. The bar itself is a very traditional looking, very square room. On entering the bar you need to wait to be allocated a seat, and you order drinks via the friendly and very knowledgeable wait staff.
They have an extensive cocktail list - some of which are incredibly expensive. A friend I was with tried a $30 cocktail that was a combination of high-end whiskeys served in a specially labeled bottle.
I didn't try any of their food, as we went there later in the night, but they have what looks like an OK bar food menu.
Not being a fan of cocktails myself, I reluctantly followed my friend here. The cocktail bars in Sydney are pretty much your one-dimensional kinda places with the cocky bar staff who would rather serve the chick with the significant chest and non-existent clothing or talk to their workmates, or serve very average cocktails. NOW, these guys at Eau de Vie know their stuff. And theyre super nice to boot. Right off the cuff, the welcome is warm, the venue with its low-lighting and absence of the usual penchant for cold and modern interiors is somewhere that makes me want to find a good spot, settle in and stick around for the night. Not to mention the drinks..... each one I tasted (mainly recommendations from staff) was truly different, complex, layered and interesting. And so I kinda hope no-one likes it as much as I do but judging by the crowd that gathered on Thurs night, I might be out of luck here.
