Edinburgh Castle Hotel

Directions
Occupying a heritage-listed Art Deco building, The Edinburgh Castle Hotel in Sydney will transport you back in time when swing was in. Occupying several levels, this spacious establishment is ideal for functions. With a bistro on site, you can also order traditional pub fare for lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, if you venture just beyond the warm rich hues of the lounge bar, you will enter the open air deck; a rare find within an inner city pub.

Had a chicken schnitzel lunch here at the upstairs dining room. It arrived quickly, probably as we were there first but the time from order to food arriving was also short. Food portion is good. The menu selection and range of wine is good. The decor is typically a pub bar/hotel, very warming and cosy. Don't swing a cat but enough room to fit groups. If you want a nicer pub grub experience, give this a go. Expect the usual rushed customer service from establishments of this type.

Actually, pretty disappointing experience on the dining upstairs here. A booking for a large group and being the first people in the restaurant the staff seemed clueless about which table we were to be seated at. We found the table with our name on it before they could work out what was what. No big deal I guess, but kinda set the tone for the whole lunch.

Seemingly much confusion when ordering at the bar, and the till hadn't been opened yet, and couldn't find change for people paying. It was after 12pm... and we had a reservation, it shouldn't have been a real surprise that money would need to change hands around that time.

Seated for no more than 5mins after orders were placed and food started appearing on the table. How can this be even possible? Then it was clear to me how it was possible. Almost every dish seemingly had been pre-prepared and warmed up and slapped on a plate before being delivered with indifference and attitude by the wait staff. Look, I know that there's all sorts of tricks to help speed along food service. I get it. You run a business, and there's peaks and troughs in ordering, and you need systems to get food out the door quickly to hungry patrons. Totally get it. But, when it's obvious you've used every short cut in the book - I have a problem with that.

Steak sandwich consisted of limp yellow lettuce, pre-cooked and barely reheated piece of sandwich steak, generous serve of onion jam to disguise any real food flavours, sandwiched between barely toasted pieces of bread. It was hardly even above warm, and could have almost been described as room temperature. The chips on the side, while crunchy, were still barely even warm. All dishes were served similarly and one diner at our table received their order after everyone else had finished their meal.

And you know when you're just getting attitude from the wait staff, and you sit there wondering what crime you committed to suffer their huffs, and shoves of plates in front of you? You couldn't ever say that they were "rude" - but, just, you know.... what's the harm in being a decent human if your in the service industry. We weren't unpleasant, drunk, loud, or rude. Just a group of office dwellers having a group lunch.

So, as it's common to say these days...all of these gripes are "first world problems". No one died, the food didn't make me sick and the dining company was good. Just that the experience wasn't worthy of recommending. And that's what this long review is about. Be your own judge. This was just one meal from probably thousands they've served - maybe the other times they're great?

A pub with many different functions. Not bad for a spot of lunch during the working week (although the steaks are never great). Also quite good for a drink after 5pm, any day of the week - Friday evening being the busiest. Even a place to visit on Saturday night where you can take part in everyone's favourite entertainment - Trashioke - just like karaoke but louder and more unbalanced.
