    A more-than-welcome sign that style is creeping north up Lygon Street.

    WHEN Small Block cafe opened five years ago, it started the "Lygon Street in Brunswick is sooo trendy" thing. That initially seemed most unlikely given that the prevailing view of Lygon Street, albeit the Carlton end, was of spruiker-lured tourists sitting at pavement tables eating average pasta. Now, three years after selling their successful and pioneering cafe for a packet, Sarah and Martin Croston are back, after a bit of a world tour, little more than 700 metres up the road from Small Block. Here, where Lygon Street's streetscape turns more industrial, they've set up shop in an old factory. Converted into a minimalist space with polished concrete floors and whitewashed brick, it feels a lot bigger than the old place but isn't. The first impression is of neatness from the ranks of school chairs flanking wood tables topped with reclaimed Tasmanian messmate and a long padded banquette.
