Reviews of Felix Bar & Bistro

The decor and ambience of this French bistro is appealing and charming and is what attracted me to try out this Merivale restaurant located in the Ivy complex. However, comparing it to other restaurants of the Merivale company (such as Est and Sailor's Thai), I was disappointed with the food and menu selection. I ordered the vegetable ravioli which was tasty, however the main dish - the roasted duck, tasted ordinary and not rich in flavour as i hoped it would be. I enjoyed the profiteroles for dessert, but yet again, it seemed ordinary and something i could make at home. The selection on the menu was not as diverse as expected and the other desserts on the menu didn't seem appealing enough. I did appreciate our friendly waiter, however he took about 25 minutes to bring my friend's 2nd beer. Its definitely a great place to take someone to impress due to the great environment, but the food was not very impressive.

After a friend raved about this restaurant, I thought I would look past the key detraction of being located in the Ivy and try it out. Once you enter the doors of this restaurant, you no longer feel like you are in the Ivy, let alone Sydney. While it is obviously inspired by restaurants overseas, it does feel like you are somewhere else and its hard not to be impressed.

Once we were seated, the service was prompt but a little overbearing. The drinks seems to take forever and the waiter wasn't really listening. The food was great but not quite spectacular. I ordered the Gruyere Souffle which lacked flavour and tasted more like cheesy scrambled eggs than souffle followed by rabbit crepinettes. They were balls of rabbit rolled in a thin crepe with jus and roasted swede. While they were a little dry, the flavours were great. The meal was still enjoyable but I did have high expectations. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a night out somewhere different.

Really liked that they had a seafood bar that you could order freshly shucked oysters and scallops, you just have to be prepared for a bit of Sydney attitude.

After coming here for dinner the other night this is my new favourite restaurant. Just standing outside Felix you feel like you're in Paris, with the red awnings and tables on the footpath. Inside is just as authentic, with well-dressed people huddled around small tables under dim lights, laughing and talking loudly while efficient French waiters dash in every direction.

The service was great and the food was fantastic. I had a goats cheese and onion tart for entree and crumbed rabbit with a carrot salad for main - both excellent. The dessert was an orange and cardamon vacherin (kind of like a cross between ice cream and meringue) sprinkled with gold leaf-covered pistachio. Oh. My. God. It was amazing. And it was all reasonably priced, with all mains under $34.

I can't fault Felix and I can't wait to go back.

    C'est magnifique.

While reluctant to try another Merivale restaurant because of the sheer number of them about (certainly not because they're bad, on the contrary...) I'll give credit where credit's due. If there's a new restaurant you must try in Sydney, make sure Felix is on the list somewhere.

Momentarily transported to a bistro off the Avenue des Champs Elysees, it doesnt feel like you're having a meal in the middle of the Sydney CBD at all. The decor and lovely French staff made it all the more special with none of the negative preconceived notions about French dining but everything that's good about it.

All round an extremely enjoyable dining experience.
