Fishmongers offers a fancier version of your standard takeaway fish and chips. Located just a little way back from Bondi Beach, its usually pretty busy, which is indicative of the yummy food you can get. While the price tag is a little more than youre standard takeaway, the food makes it worth it. I usually get the salmon or squid with salad, but on any given night theres a number of specials on offer. You generally choose what fish/seafood you want, then select your side, whether it be chips, salad or tempura veggies. You also get corn on the cob with most dishes. Now when I say dishes, you should know that everything is served in brown takeaway boxes, whether youre dining in or taking it down to Bondi to eat. In my experience, may I suggest doing the latter theres nothing better than sitting on the grass at South Bondi eating your fish and chips.

Fish Mongers is the ultimate in gourmet fish and chips. They were originally hugely popular in Byron Bay so have extended to Sydney where they seem to get similar success. Set in the heart of busy Hall Street about 200m from the beach, small wooden benches fill the interior and spill out onto the street and attract Bondi locals and travellers alike. On a busy night it is hard to get a table, but as the beach is so close you can get a takeaway box and enjoy it with the seagulls. I usually go for the grilled fish and salad option, however the crumbed calamari and the tempura prawns are also fantastic. If you are after something slightly more exotic, then try the marinated octopus with your choice of salad. Slightly more expensive than a regular fish and chip shop, but the quality of the meal is definitely worth the extra coin.

Definitely in the running for best takeaway gourmet fish & chip shop in NSW a personal favourite. I used to frequent this place whilst on my yearly Summer holiday at Byron Bay, and was very excited to learn that there was also one close to home in Bondi.
There is a meal to suit all types of fish lovers, with a specials board updated daily. My trusty favourite is the grilled Hoki fillet with salad. Deliciously fresh, seasoned fish served on top of mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, the odd slice of fresh pickled ginger, a sliver of barbequed corn and sprinkled with crunchy sweet potato chips with a small tub of fresh pesto on the side. My boyfriend is a fan of the more traditional fish and chips. The chips however are definitely not your standard. Chunky, hand-cut, and lightly battered - delicious. Today he orders the grilled prawns and chips with an additional tub of aioli and is not disappointed with the large, succulent prawns that are presented to him.
There is the option of eating in, but we prefer to take our square cardboard boxes of delights and stroll a few hundred metres to Bondi beach & eat there. A perfect, yet affordable date night.
